Cannabis News - Michigan - Will the Next Governor Veto the Will of the People? - Breaking the Narritive

Greetings to those in The Great Lakes State and my thanks for voting to let the people decide on whether or not to be the next U.S.A. state to legalize cannabis for adult/recreational use. The past medical use laws were, as they always are, a great success and now it is time for the next step.

Though the initiative to get the measure on the ballot was passed by a modest margin, 56.2% to 38%, support for the new laws are looking at much more support for the actual vote taking place on November 6th, 2018.

Check out what Click on Detroit received as polling feedback.

I believe that it isn't overly optimistic to say that Proposal 18-1 will pass with out an issues with that kind of support. It seems that there is only a couple demographics that oppose it more so than not and that brings me to my title bit.

There is a narrative floating around that the Republican candidate for Governor, Bill Schuette, will vote no on the cannabis question. This is a spin on what he actually said though. In context, it looks like he said that he will vote no in the voting booth but will no way try to veto the law if it is passed by the people of Michigan. Here is the official statement given by his campaign office to Michigan Radio NPR.

Why I think he is taking this non-stance, is of course the voice of the republican voter base. The strongest groups who voted against the initiative were reported to be both strongly republican and 65+ which is a demographic that is typically conservative depending on where you look. Without a play to both sides he will lose handedly to his democratic opponent.

I only bring this up because while doing research I found quite a bit of misinformation on this topic. While the Democratic candidate for governor, Gretchen Whitmer, does fully support the legalization effort, her opponent is only against it on moral grounds and has made clear the -no vote- he spoke of is a personal one and not going any further than the polling station in his neighborhood.

I think all of this is wonderful news for the people of Michigan because to me it looks like no matter who you support or what political side you may have chosen you can get together on this vote coming Nov 6. Please do not let this become a wedge issue and trust in your fellow voters to come together on helping each other live the best, most free lives they choose to pursue in the beautiful great lakes region.

Please help break the divisive narrative going around this important vote by upvoting and sharing this post.
Thank you for reading, have a great day!

Still a bit conflicted when it comes to cannabis TBH though, having seen drugs destroy lives. I have also seen it literally save people who go through unimaginable pain so I guess what is used can be abused

I don't smoke,
the way i see it tabacco is the part that makes canna addictive.
People who evaporate canna don't seem to have addictive behaviour.
Don't know that many but this is first hand observations.

There are better people than me to show how it can be really positive for people who it can help. I would give @johnvibes a read because he has done great work in that area I bet a few people who are reading this would be happy to pitch in there too :).

I have watched the debates this year; clinging to the chair.
The incumbent Stabenow (D) who is our state senator is a career politician here. Has done not too much for our advancement in the economy, education or anywhere else over the last 40 years. ANything to improve the midwest. middle America and or state (that Trump offers up) she votes down. Not too fond of that mentality considering she was ALL for NAFTA in the 1990s and it almost ruined our lives- hubby got laid off cause jobs went south) Not even sure she supported the USMCA that was just introduced for the US, Canada and Mexico.

Dems are more likely to vote for the approval of any and all cannabis related laws and bills.. but the governor is the one to watch. Bill Schuette (R) who is running for governor (and the current Atty General of the state) is against ANY legalization of cannabis as far as I know. He opponent Gretchen Whitmer (D) says she is a proponent to approve cannabis.. but... yeah...
Rock meet hardplace

If the governor wants to make sure they only serve one term and has everyone hating them, then yeah.

It's a shame some folk want to make it a left vs right issue. We all benefit from allowing people the freedom to choose their own lifestyles I'd say.

To me, it's a shame that basically anything is a left or right issue. Nowadays, it doesn't even matter the issue so much as what side you're on. Both sides are basically like cults.

I know what you mean, all facets of media really need to take a break from it.
If we can come together on this I bet we see the next step getting people even closer though.

Whichever way it falls, need to look at all the aspects of laws, and the environmental impacts, etc. It has been an economic and ecological disaster in Oregon with recreation, main reason, our liquor commission took over the regulations and they have seriously F*CKED IT UP, paving the way for big PHARMA to take over this industry! For example MILLIONS OF POUNDS OF MEDICINE SITTING ROTTING IN WAREHOUSES! Old school growers don't want to be bothered with this rule and that.. Here in Eugene, they had no regulations on how many or how much distance between dispensaries, now, all are closing or prices have plummeted. kinda a huge mess here, the Puget Sound has algae from all the chemical run offs of toxic fertilizers etc. we no longer recycle plastic and the industry hasn't changed over to hemp/bio degradable products. Not to mention the electricity needs have soared on the West coast. Many topics and areas to be considered within this industry to make it healthier shift on planet awesome, like any change it will take decades to get things panned out. Being from Michigan, I really would like to see this state learn from Colorado or somewhere where they have years of experience of what not to do. The health of the Great Lakes and the largest body of clean water on our planet is there and it depends on us to protect it.

Ultimately I believe the best thing for everyone is to allow those who wish to have their own garden be free to do so.
People who are dedicated will refine their processes so that waste and contamination is controlled to them and theirs and more local regulations can guide the process.
Factory farming and government control needs to be reduced wherever possible.
