Grapthar's Song of the Day: John Doe 'Telephone By The Bed'
John Doe - Telephone By The Bed
John Doe is an American
singer/songwriter, bass-player, actor, poet, etc. known for his time in the legendary LA Punk band, X. He was born John Nommensen Duchac in Illinois, in 1953, so he was at the perfect age when punk bands began to form, and became an integral part of the LA scene. He has also embarked on a solo career (though X still tours), embracing influences and ideas from country-western, folk, ‘50s rock, and punk throughout his music. Doe has a really unique quality to his voice that is instantly recognizable, which works really well with his often dark musical performances.

I am not sure if this
track was released on any of his solo releases, as the only place I’ve discovered it is on a best-of compilation, The Best of John Doe: This Far. It’s got a great post-punk sort of vibe, with the (more) complex (than punk) chord progression, utilizing some really cool dissonances to create a lot of tension. Doe has a great ear for interesting harmonies, and creates some amazing melodies on top of them. I also love the tone of the guitars on this track, it reminds me a lot of the Jeff Buckley song Vancouver, clean, but thick and harmonically dense.
