Barcelona a city where the sustainable tourism is getting more and more supported.
Turisme de Barcelona Consortium was founded in 1993, and its main goal is to promote the city as a tourism destination. Also their product is the Barcelona Tourist Bus Card. This association seems to be successful, since the number of bed nights in the city grew from ~ 4,7 million to ~15,5 million in the first 15 years operation. The consortium is participated by the City Council, the Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Shipping and the Barcelona Promotion foundation.
The Stakeholders type is “Local Government and destination bodies”.
Recently Turisme de Barcelona has been very committed to sustainability.
The consortiums main role in delivering sustainable tourism is deciding about the local strategic direction and planning. Managing and developing local infrastructure is also their task, such as the implementation of policy and regulations.
Barcelona’s sustainable destination program has already achieved a lot. The city has was awarded for its activities the Biosphere World Class Destination certification in 2011 – in recognition of the responsible management of the tourism by the Turisme de Barcelona Consortium and the Barcelona City Council. They are also member of the Global Sustainable Tourism Council, which is part of the World Tourism Organisation.
