The Number 23 (film): Honestly much better than I expected

in #films5 years ago

I had avoided watching this movie until yesterday because of some information I received about it not being very good. I definitely disagree with the information that I got and thoroughly enjoyed this movie.

This film came out in 2007 and this was a time when Jim Carrey was really trying to break the stigma of his being type-cast as a whimsical actor specifically designed for comedy. There have been a number of attempts on Jim's part and some were good, others not so much. I think that the hardest part for him is that his silly movies like Ace Ventura and what not, are always going to be what we think of when we see him, so it is difficult to take him seriously.

However, i was pleasantly surprised by Jim's performance, even the parts where he is playing a bad ass detective with tattoos and what not. He is convincing and I was impressed.

This movie was ripped apart by critics, Richard Roeper was one of the only professional critics who claimed he liked it. The complaints that critics had about it was that it was confusing and lacked any style. I gotta say that I completely disagree with this. I enjoyed the flashbacks that Jim Carey was experiencing as he visualized the scenes in the books he was reading.

The gradual fascination with the number 23 was pretty interesting to me. I kept looking for places in which the number would appear as well and actually noticed something that the didn't point out in the film, which is that the only numbers on their license plate adds up to 23 as well.

There is a twist ending that I guess not many people appreciated, but I actually did like it. I dunno, I guess all the people that hated it just saw this film in a different way than I did.

I normally am one of those people that can't get on board with whatever film happened to win all the accolades from critics not the other way around. I don't really understand why everyone felt this movie was terrible. Oh well, I guess I am happy to not be the same as everyone else.

I suppose if you went into this film with the same expectations as I did that you might be pleasantly surprised. I went in believing that it was going to be absolute crap and was impressed with how not-crap it was. I suppose you really need to pay attention. I dunno. whatever. I liked it.

I have a friend that decided to go through and watch all of the critically acclaimed movies. You know the ones that they say are absolute classics like Citizen Kane, etc. If I remember right he was not that impressed. I don't really know what those critics are looking for most of the time, but I know what I like so that is really all that matters right? I remember when this came out. The trailer looked really freaky and I agree it was hard to imagine Jim in a non funny roll.

Yes. A lot of films that were big winner of awards well, we need to be able to look at those films based on the mood of the times and also the cinematic limitations of the period, and try to appreciate it thinking in that way.

I find a lot of award winners from years past to be very boring. The other day i tried to watch "Chariots of Fire" simply because of the iconic song. After about 40 minutes nothing had happened and i turned it off.

That was a pretty long movie. Better off just doing a search for Vangelis on Spotify!

This movie is so weird, I like so much the numbers and I remember that when I saw it for the first time, it gave to me the push to go into the study of math in a non standard way! :)

Well! I never seen Jim Carrey in serious role before! This is interesting, I’ll have to find the time to see this film. I quite like all his other films thought, he’s a good actor.
There are not many good old classic films around these days! All the dvd shops went out of business, I would love to collect old DVDs.
