Steamworld Dig: Simple and fun

in #getyerlearnon8 years ago

This game was on special for $5 on Steam so I thought I'd give it a go. It certainly isn't hardcore gaming but for such a low price, I would say it is a great time killer that can be enjoyed by anyone. It is available on all consoles (might not be on Xbox) as well as PC

The game is extremely easy to start, basically you have inherited a mine and down you go into it. At first your pickaxe is extremely weak and there are certain areas you cannot enter because of that, certain rocks can not be destroyed at this point and it becomes evident that you need to turn back and discover something you haven't found yet. This can actually be quite tedious at first because the game involves, sometimes, backtracking quite a long ways past corridors that you made that are not completely devoid of enemies. There are certain gems that you will find while digging that are worth money and of course this is almost entirely how upgrades are achieved.

One of the interesting things about this game is that as you dig, you permanently alter the game world, so to speak. The corridors you make end up staying that way forever unless you erase your data. This can complicate things because sometimes you can put yourself in a position where you can't get out the same way you came in. I suppose there is a way to permanently trap yourself and necessitate killing yourself in order to get out but I couldn't make that happen.

The game is easy enough that your kids would enjoy it but strangely addictive for 40 year-old kids too. I found myself playing for hours (which is about how long it takes to complete the entire game to be honest) There are some "puzzle rooms" where you have to figure it out in order to progress but i don't feel as though any of them were terribly difficult.

It looks dumb - i thought so too, but it is actually a pretty decent game. If it drops to $5 again on Steam I say give it a go.

This indie game is extremely fun. It has tight controls and a very simple, but rewarding concept: you dig and find treasures! There are constant bigger and better upgrades to be purchased. The saves are frequent and death is punished by an expensive loss of valuable $$. A game like this is perfect for the Switch as it is very easy to pick up, play for a bit, then put it down. The story is pretty straightforward, but kept me interested. I will pick up the sequel next.

Has my son seen him playing this game I have not been able to pay attention since my work consumes me most of the day.
I recommend a game for android "armadillo gold rush" this game is very addictive previously I spent hours and hours playing this game.

Looks cool, love the art. Indy games always have awesome, quirky art :)

This game reminds me of a game i used to play "bud red head", dunno if you've played before or heard of it, is was quite puzzling and fun and a great time killer, the annoying they have in common is the fact that you have to backtrack sometimes to find things or navigate your way around, it wasn't the best of games but it was surely nice to play, gonna give this a try.
