Overkill (metal band): I tried to like them, i just dont

in #opinion6 years ago

So back in the 90's you had to rely on recommendations or just take a chance at the music store in order to find new acts. Metal wasn't generally on MTV or the radio (outside of pop) so there really wasn't any other way to find out about new music and sometimes you buy an album that you think is "meh" (before saying "meh" was a thing.)

This album, called Horrorscope was the only album by Overkill I ever owned and since I paid something like $20 for the album based almost entirely upon what section of the store it was in and the cover art, I really had no idea what I was getting myself into. I, as a teenager, wanted to be the guy discovering something to introduce my metal pals to at school or something. I tried and tried to like this (which is not a great way to be with a band) but in the end I don't really like them.

They were really hard for the time period and they have been around for ages and as far as I know they are still around today. They have 18 albums so there must be some people out there that like them but to be honest, i could be given tickets to go their show and would probably not consider it worth the taxi to get there. Sorry guys, i am sure you worked really hard and you are definitely talented, but it just isn't my cuppa!

i do, however, enjoy the complete embracement of 80's metal look

The main reason that I don't like them is because the singer, who is one of the only members of the group that has remained over the years, kind of annoys me with his voice and this isn't a good place to start. I also am not a huge fan of speed-metal-thrash despite the fact that I am not entirely sure what that means.

I listened to the entire track, hoping that perhaps like wine it had gotten better with time but at least for me, not it hasn't. They still tour and people still like them so I guess kudos to you guys! Believe in your dreams!

Not a fan of them too, and for the same reason. The singer's vocals are like a more sinister version of James LaBrie.

Dream Theater, now that is an underappreciated band. I recently found out that those guys have a great sense of humor as they quipped about their "greatest hits" album being a bit of a farce since they only ever had 1 hit.

I remember liking a couple of their songs on the radio when i was in middle school. Then I discovered iced earth and forgot about overkill.

It's the same for me!

Buying an album on the basis of the 'cool cover'. I have to admit I did with once with Rush's Hemispheres.

It turned out positive in my case. I cant say i'm into trash either unless you count Opeth as that.
