Coconuts Restaurant Krabi review

This establishment is relatively new and specializes in breakfast and lunch. They are not open for dinner and this is reflected in their main-course-free menu. It is situated in the backpacker part of town and if you are touring through, you likely wont be far from it. That being said: It caters to a market that I don't believe is me.

Fantastic presentation - poor delivery of actual ordered product

Let's start with that cappuccino. I admire the talent and care that goes into creating this piece of art. I do not however appreciate the candy-bar amount of calories that were put on top of my coffee without me knowing beforehand. You see, i try to avoid processed sugar and now I have 2 kinds of it on top of my coffee. The fact that they bring sugar to the table as well suggests to me that people must really enjoy sugar more than they do the actual taste of coffee. I had to remove a great deal of the milk froth in order to get rid of the unwanted chocolate and caramel.

I like it when a place spends just the right amount of money on decorum so as to not artificially raise the price of the items inside. While still being comfortable, the lack of leather covered recliners like they have in the chains keeps the cost of my coffees and breakfast low. I came here to eat, not to admire the furniture (although it is still a nice interior.) Well done on this front Coconuts

lovely presentation, but not what i was looking for in taste

I have been trying to get more fruit in my life as I fear I am missing out on a lot of vitamins because I am primarily a carnivore. This is why I ordered the SMOOTHIE BOWL. That presentation is glorious for sure. A lot of time went into that for certain. Unfortunately, for me, this is where the appeal ended. I found this thing to be almost nauseatingly sweet.

This is not the shop's fault. I should have been more careful knowing what I know about how Thai's tend to prepare a "smoothie." There was so much extra sugar in the fruit blend that went on the bottom that it was like eating a dessert rather than breakfast. Maybe that is what some people want but it is not what i want. I should have just stuck to my English Breakfast and taken a multi-vitamin (there's an idea!)

I ended up pulling all the fruit out of the syrupy red mess on the bottom and not eating much of the smoothie portion of the bowl at all. Seriously, they really went overboard on the sugar additives which is surprising since the fruits they used in making the smoothie most likely had enough natural sugar in them already.

overall analysis

It probably sounds like I am berating this place and I kind of am. Their heart is in the right place but they just have an over-dependence on sugar as an additive to apparently everything. I would still recommend eating here because the staff are friendly and efficient and prices are a great value as well. However, if you are like me and you are trying to avoid processed sugar, you need to be very specific with the people that are serving your food because it seems to be their forte.

I will likely eat here again but not without demanding "hold the extra sugar."
