Banh Mi Restaurant in Chiang Mai - Overpriced and tasteless

in #thailand6 years ago (edited)

I suppose I shouldn't be surprised seeing as how this place is still in the super-touristy part of the city. However, I thought that since it was down a dark (and a little bit scary) side road that perhaps it would be a gem. It was not.

The menu was chockablock with the usual suspects. Pad Thai, red curry, green curry, something something something with cashew nuts and of course Penang Curry.

Penang Curry (it has multiple ways of being spelled) is actually one of my favorites and that is the reason why I ordered it: I would be able to "suss out " if it was good or not. I have eaten Penang curry no less than 500 times and feel as though I am a seasoned veteran of this particular culinary option.

It was not good. It had zero flavor, zero spice, zero heat. Based on the price that I paid I figured that I would at least get a massive portion of it but even that didn't happen.

This felt like it was something that I could have bought from 7-11 in a microwaveable container and honestly it wouldn't surprise me if that was exactly what it was. I understand that in this part of town they attempt to make dishes less spicy to accommodate foreigner taste-buds, but I ordered speaking Thai and specifically asked for them to make "the same way you would for a Thai person."

I can't help but think that in Banh Mi, that they are simply pretending to actually cook something when you order and in reality everything is already done and they just have to smack a wok and make sounds to cover the sound of the microwave doing its job. The food was just awful. I ate it all because i was hungry and if I had known it was going to be this poor I would have just had a 7-11 dish and eliminated the middle-man.

The establishment is also covered in a mish-mash of crap that says to the customer "hey! We kinda cleared out our living room.... why not come and have something to eat?" I was completely unimpressed on every imaginable level.

I only ate here because the bicycle app that I wrote about before had 3 of the bikes parked out in front of their place and I needed to eat something before I went to meet my friend on the other side of town. I am posting their location only so people with the wherewithal to avoid overpriced garbage food can benefit from my mistake.

this is where Banh Mi is located... you have been warned

You must have an iron plated stomach by now with all the dodgy establishments you have eaten in. I know what it's like to be hungry and get served up something so disappointing. Let us hope you find some gems really soon as they have to be there.

Too bad you had to go through that bad experience, @gooddream. Sometimes those places that seem expensive are a clear scam. I hope you'll soon get a new place that will make you forget the bad taste. Greetings.

I feel as though my writing tends to lean to the "negative" side of things. Maybe that says something about me as a person. I suppose just like when i was a teacher I always remembered the really bad ones.

Surely, now i have been warned by you

Yeah I agree in that city they make food less spicy just because of foreigner's taste. although It was a thorough review indeed.
Keep up with amazing content.

There is always next time :), Highly Resteemed
