activists / government can tell you what to do with your own property

I don't know if you know much about Denver, Colorado but I know a bit. It is one of those cities that for someone conservative like me, seems like a place that you would rather avoid. I love Colorado, itis one of the most beautiful places in the USA, but there are some strange attitudes held by the people of the Denver.

In a recent "I can't believe I am reading this" moment, i found out about a story in Denver where a man wants to retire and sell off his land / business but some busybody activists are attempting to ruin all of that.

The story is about a diner, it has been open for 20 years all run by the same man, and now he simply wants to sell it and move on. However, some Social Justice Warriors who don't have enough fake racism and fascism to fight have decided to make preservation of a building that isn't even theirs , a battle to go to court over.

Tom Messina has spent that past few decades making eggs and bacon for patrons at his 24-hour restaurant. He had always had a plan to later sell the business and the valuable land it sits on, in order to retire at a reasonable age. That time is now.

At the 11th hour a bunch of dicks who think that they know what is best for the world jumped in to have his building declared as a historical landmark and therefore makes it illegal for Tom to do anything that would damage the property.

Tom had planned to sell his property and a land developer was going to tear it down and put up apartments with ground floor shops, just like all the neighboring properties. But because some hipster assholes feel as though this diner is some sort of historical something or other, the city can actually come in and tell you that you can't destroy your own property.

Look, I like a diner as much as the next guy but this building is what every single other diner looked like in the 70's, it isn't special. If you feel as though these cheaply made buildings deserve preserving then you are a crazy person. It's not exactly Slane Castle. Every single Denny's in America looked like this until 10 years ago or so..

I really dislike most aspects of the government but I find the fact that they can jump in and tell you what you can do with your own property to be infuriating. They are in the process of declaring his property a Landmark. If these SJW's succeed in their attempt to use the government to suppress this man's freedom by getting that declaration done, his property value will drop, dramatically.

Imagine that. You spend your entire life investing in a plan in physical property and after working towards it for 20 years a group of vaping, neck beard, hipsters with a penchant for ugly 1970's architecture can completely take your dream away from you. Is that freedom?

If it was my building a fire would accidentally start while they are debating the "monument" status.

Sort:

Wow, that is a pretty classic and iconic building. It reminds me a lot of the old HoJo's or that type of establishment with the sweeping ceilings and all the windows. That is pretty pathetic that people are able to step in and do that kind of thing. Too bad he couldn't have gotten the sale through quicker. Then it would have been up to the investor to figure out what to do...

The thing that gets me is that these people that are so interested in preserving this iconic building aren't concerned enough about it to spend their own money to take on the property and do the preservation themselves.

You see this is the problem I have with some people: They don't care enough to use their own money to do something, but they certainly care enough to spend YOUR money to achieve those ends.

I think that someone who owns something, even if that thing happens to be historic (which I don't think this building that was literally everywhere 30 years ago is) that they can and should be able to do whatever the frick they want to with it.

If I spend my money on a plot of land that has a famous historical ancient castle on it and I want to raze it to the ground just because I am an asshole, I should be entitled to do precisely that.

I have a couple of theories on this activists: One, they are busybody dill-holes that look for trouble anywhere they can and don't really care so much about the building - but they enjoy imposing their will on others.

OR (and i think this one is more likely)

They are residents of the area and really don't like the idea of the noise that is going to accompany what is bound to be several years of construction noise and a way to stop that is to make the construction illegal.

That's part of the reason I would never live in a community that has an HOA. I want to be able to do what I want with my property when I want.

I think it is a fundamental principal of life. Stuff like this really irritates me and makes me happy that i live where I do. You can do basically whatever the frack you want to with your land over here.

Wanna have a farm in your front yard? It's your land, go for it

Wanna open a minimart in your living room? "it's your land, go for it"

Any disputes are settled by common courtesy and neighbors being neighbors. You know,,, the way the west used to be. Now we need papa government to intervene.... We have become the little kid that knows how to do nothing, has no social skills, and will "tattle" on anyone when things don't go our way.
