Ulog 11: Saving Seeds For Next Year's Planting Season

in #tribesteemup8 years ago (edited)

Gardening and homesteading are 24/7 jobs as well as 12 months out of the year. There is no down time. There really is no vacation.

Once you have the seed planted... it'll be time to harvest before you know it.Once the harvest is complete, it'll be time to save seeds for next year's grow.

It's an endless, but rewarding, thing to be is a gardener, homesteader and becoming self-sustainable.

I have started saving heirloom seeds from this year's gardens for next season. I want to make sure I replenish my seed stash and have plenty for the years to come without having to buy any more seeds for a few years.

So far I have saved seeds from:

  • Kentucky Wonder Green Beans
  • Feverfew
  • Red Clover (foraged)
  • Goji berry (received berry from someone)
  • Ox-Eye Daisy (asked permission to forage)
  • Sweet pepper- for homemade paprika (received from someone)
  • Yarrow (foraged)
  • Wild Lettuce
  • Basil (Holy and Genovese)
  • Milk Thistle (foraged)
  • Marigold (not calendula)

I still need to harvest seeds from:

  • Mexican Sour Gherkins
  • Arugula
  • Radicchio
  • Luffa gourd

And a slew of others (flowers and herbs). I won't be doing any seed harvesting on the oregano, dill, chive, lemon balm or comfrey; as though are more or less perennials or will self-seed on their own. The same can be said for feverfew, but I harvested seeds from this year's flowers so I can start sowing the flowers/herb in other areas of the property.

I may be a LONG ways from being competition for the Svalbard Global Seed Vault, but I am working my way up the garden seed saving ladder of success!

There you have a very nice collection of seeds. :-)

I also has basil and planted it this year. You could add chili peppers to your collection ;-)

I was really surprised that my seeds (from a chili peppers) still drive out after more than a year.

I love basil! I add it to many of my dishes... I probably have about a pound of it dehydrated already but will need to do another round before it all goes to seed soon

Lovely to save your own seeds - I have some special tomato seeds that I dried out last season and am looking forward to planting them as soon as our weather warms up.

Oh I bet! What variety are they?

Not sure as I saved them from produce I got from an organic grower.

howdy there @goldendawne! did you have to buy all those seeds specifically as heirloom seeds the first time to plant them, like from Baker Seed company or someone?

I bought all of them through Michigan Seed Co and Annie's HeirloomSeeds online. But this is the first year I have been adamant about saving

never heard of them! haha..well they must be excellent but those things are expensive aren't they? they should be because normally you only have to buy them once from them and then you have your own like you are so wisely doing!

They're a little higher than others seeds but so worth it. All are heirloom and will continue producing for years to come; so now that I have the seed harvesting and collecting started, I know I won't have to spend much, if any at all, in the years to come. Unless something new comes along that I'd like to add to my garden.

haha! now that's the funnies thing I've heard today goldendawne!

you know there's always going to be lots more! that's why you need acreage.

Gardening and Homesteading are a full time job! Thank you for sharing your harvest with us! 😊
