It's made in a half hour with proper tools so why not! No need to buy a sawhorse or lumber. It looks a bit weak but that's only looks. I've put 4 pine logs of 4 meters long on it without a problem.

How to build it

What you do need is:

  • a chainsaw
  • safety gear
  • 3cm width drillbit
  • drill
  • nails
  • a log 20-30cm width.
  • axe
  • drawknife

Start to saw down a tree and use the thickest part. Cut of a 2meter long piece and saw it length wise through the middle with the chainsaw. You first draw a straight line with your chainsaw and you go saw every time a centimetre deeper. If you cut directly deep into the log you won't easily make a straight cut. If your not comfortable with the chainsaw you can also split the log with a couple of iron wedges.

Now you take the prettiest half and you debark it. Than you drill 4 holes in the round side of the half. Here you put in four 1 meter long sticks that become the legs. I use on one side a log and the other side 2 legs. That works too. The legs should be made of a flexible and tough type of wood. Oak, Hickory or Robinia. Cut the end of the legs round and fit them into the holes. It should be a tight fit. Connect the 2 legs with a horizontal plank or stick so it becomes much stronger.

With that done you drill 6 holes on the flat side. All with a angle of roughly 30-40 degrees. The log holders can be of any type of wood except pine.

The video I found on Youtube is from a great sawhorse. Only the size is way to small too be efficient. He also spent a good amount of time building it but it's definetly one pretty sawhorse!

Use of the sawhorse

Like I already said you can put allot of weight on the sawhorse. It's much tougher than it looks. Load the logs and sticks on the sawhorse. Start cutting at the ends of the logs like you see on the picture.

Last but not least safety!

Working in the forest or with a chainsaw requires protective clothing. Especially the amateurs should wear protection. They are the group that get hurt all the time. Mistakes are made easy so don't take it lightly. Safety pant, ear protection, a helmet are just essentials. Read the manual and don't buy a big saw. For most people 2 or 3hp with a 30cm blade is more than enough.
