"The Adjustment Bureau" by George Nolfi - movie review

in #cinema6 years ago (edited)

I tried a couple of innovations, but I did not get one thing, so I start up like this: "The Adjustment Bureau," says the best romantic film from "Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind streaming". And just like him, he is a genre that include romance, fantastic and fantasy elements, a thriller that even a little "noir". Even though it is not a masterpiece, in the face of the serious crisis of so-called love films, it is a breath of fresh air that will not only delight the romantic, but it will make one or two not think about it they focus on serious topics such as pure chance, free choice, or some higher power that determines our destiny. I suppose the bigger fans of the great writer Philip K. Dick can be disappointed that there is a very small part of the original story in the film and that the love element comes a little bit more, but I personally think that this element fits perfectly of the topics that Dick in general is excited about - as the nature of reality or of human identity - and in perspective I can not say that his love was alien. And I know this is not an excuse - just a fact - but a huge part of Dick's films, including those we lead for classics such as "Blade runner" and "The Minority Report", are quite free interpretations.

But what is it really about? Facing a turning point in his life, young and charismatic politician David Norris (Matt Damon) meets the beautiful ballet dancer Elisse Selas (Emily Blunt) and is immediately overwhelmed by the feeling that she is destined to be together. But it turns out that this is not the case, and David faces mysterious agents with unexplained abilities to see everything happening in our world happening as planned, and who do their best to keep Elias apart. Faced with overwhelming superiority, David must leave Elisse and accept his path ... or run the risk of failing both his dreams and hers. The good thing about the whole thing is that the main driving force at the head of the bureaucratic system is the power that is aware of the "big picture" (the lower the level of the agents controlling the course of your life, the less aware of its overall direction) is not revealed to us and we are free to interpret its nature in any way we please. For some will be destiny, for other gentlemen, for third aliens. For me, it was simply the President - if it really has a stronger force, I imagine it just like a clerk overworked.

The bad thing is that although we are talking about Philippe Dick's movie and there are all sorts of surprises, you can guess how and in which direction the events will take place, and what the main conclusion will be - we all know that "love will save the world ". But this is not a problem, yet it is clear from the beginning that the film is romantic and I can swallow it. The problem is how, although you really need to be slowly developing to make it unclear what a speech is about, in the very final of the audience the right idea is explained in the right text (as if it is not one of the most exploited) only in the cinema, but also in the whole art), on top of that, it happens with a voice behind a frame, which is beyond the gimmick. But despite the flaw, as I said at the beginning, the film is a breath of fresh air against the background of all the conveyor beliefs that flood us now and make the voice behind the frame look like a genius innovative insight. The film has mystery, tension, dynamics - in the last part we even have the beginnings of a light action - the direction of George Nolfi (who is the screenwriter of Ocean's Eight , Bourne) is unobtrusive, filming excellent (the cinematographer is the infamous John Tol), between Matt Damon and Emily Blunt is definitely chemistry and last but not least, John Saltery and Terrence Stamps are great.
