Modeling R2-D2 in Modo Part 2 - Starting on Panels

I am continuing to 3D model R2-D2 in The Foundry's Modo (see the first part here).

I had been concentrating on Artoo's head but decided to move onto the panels on the body as he looked slightly naked. The first task was to cut out the various sections from the body after having marked out where the panels should be.

Once that was done I copied the geometry into their own mesh item, deleted them from the body and then sunk in the sections where the panels would sit.

I gave the panels a little bit of thickness and started adding small details. Here I will show you how I set about creating one of the more unique panel sections.

1.PNG

I first isolated the panel and added a cylinder to mark out a section, using it as stencil as a solid drill - it basically marks out the outline on the cylinder onto the mesh below.

2.PNG

I then got rid of the cylinder and deleted the polygons that formed the circle. I cut the geometry into triangles and quads.

3.PNG

Next I selected the outline of the circle and extended the edges, pushing them into the panel. Once done I again filled the circle back in.

4.PNG

I marked out some loops for the next task.

5.PNG

This entailed me deleting some sections and then bulging out the remaining geometry.

6.PNG

Again, I extended the edges to give it some thickness and then flattened them.

7.PNG

After tidying up the geometry I filled in the open sections.

Finally I added different material groups - blue and metal.

Once complete, I exported the model, loaded it into Keyshot and added materials to the material groups I had set in Modo. Finally I rendered out this picture.

Thanks for looking.

Flip! This is incredible. How amazing that you have taught yourself this 💓👌🏻

Thank you ❤️

Wow, this is great @gmuxx. Really like the way it's coming. How does Modo compare to other modelling apps. I use Blender at the moment. Looks like cost is one factor. Does the skill set transfer from one to the other - would you know?

I have tried most 3d modeling apps and find Modo to be the easiest. Some skills transfer but Modo has some awesome unique features.

Wow, this is wonderful @gmuxx.
It must have taken you sometime to get this done.
Artoo is an amazing piece of art.
Weldon👍

Around 5 hours so far.

Thank you.

That's serious.
It was worth the time though.

That’s pretty impressive work

Every single work of #TWB I have seen are excellent...very good one @gmuxx

I will appreciate your patience.. Because 3D designing is very time costly and need patience to do it. Glad tp you Gmuxx. Good work. Well done...

great design, it should take quite a while to do it. I think you have a great ability. I congratulate you :)
