Stonehenge Road Shot

Passing Stonehenge

Stonehenge sits on the right of the A303 road as we travel to Devon on Thursday, for the long weekend.

This shot was taken on my Samsung A5 smartphone, through the window, in the rain whilst the car was in motion so, all in all, I think this came out pretty well! 😁

The kind of stuff I love the most, shooting on the fly. This one is pretty nice, thanks for sharing.
Hope you'r having a great stay, my best wishes 😊

I'm having a lovely time @drakernoise. The weather could be better but there's nothing I can do about that. I was hoping to stock up on some good photographs but at the moment it's all a bit grey! 😢

hope you're enjoying your weekend too! 😍

Grey is also a lovely color, could be funny to play a bit. XD

See. Now that's where we differ @drakernoise. Grey is not a colour I have learned to love. I don't like it. My daughter is a big fan and it seems to be quite fashionable at the moment but it's not for me.

I keep meaning to Google "good photos to take in poor light", or "good photos to take on a grey day" but I haven't gotten around to it yet! 😁

Didn't know it was a fashion color nowadays, I'm so out of the scene 😂...
I could say I'm quite on a grey part of my life so it makes sense to me.

And I think that's why I can't get into it @drakernoise. I've spent to much of my life in the greyness of depression inside that I can't get to like it outside. 😍

I guess I'm not the only one who needs to pay better attention to your titles. This time I did, though.

My guess is you've been there before. One of these days my wife would like to tour Europe (she wants to visit castles for some reason). So, maybe if we ever end up in the UK we'll get to Stonehenge.

And I would agree, it did come out remarkably well. I've tried doing the same thing and it's generally hit or miss. It's amazing how something shows up to obstruct your view or photobomb your image just at the point where you snap the picture.

Agreed @glenalbrethsen. In fact, had the topic not been roads I would have considered that car to be a photobomb but as it was I was able to use the photograph.

Stonehenge is well worth a visit and, yes, I've been there before. When I was growing up you could walk among the stones and even have a picnic there if you wanted to. Nowadays it is heavily managed and I don't think you're even allowed to touch the stones let alone sit amongst them.

There are some brilliant prehistoric sites worth visiting in Britain that are more relaxed and that, if you go at the right time, you can have to yourself. I love imagining in all the people that were there thousands of years ago going about their business.

Hope you're having an enjoyable weekend too! 😍

Being alone in places like that, even if it's for a few minutes, is the best. I've just started referring to it as first discovery. You're not the first to ever be there, but it's the first time for you, and it's best when you can have the place to yourself to explore and imagine, as you say, the people who lived there and what they might be doing.

I've had a chance to go to several of the ruins in Mexico, and would love to get to other such sites. There's just so much more going on when you're wandering through it than seeing what they've collected in a museum. Unfortunately, though, some of the best stuff ends up in the museum, so you go to the site and the museum.

I guess it's best it sit guarded and better preserved in the museum for people to see than leaving it where anyone who wanted to could just cart it off, deface or not take care of properly.

You're probably right @glenalbrethsen. Stonehenge is a victim of it's own marketing. The more people go, the more it needs to be protected. And seeing the hoards of people that were there on Thursday, which wasn't actually a holiday and in the rain, gives an indication of just how busy it must get.

You simply don't get to fully experience it when there's no quiet space to reflect. It just becomes an pile of interesting stones to be curious about and cross off your list.

There are places in Wales and Scotland still that you can find some time on your own and walk around without interference. They are just as old as Stonehenge but not as extensive and more out of the way.

I love them! 😊

A friend of mine and I took a trip to the Cancun area several years ago (probably bordering on 20 years now), and one of the places we went to was Chichen Itza. They have a ballcourt there that if I remember right is something like 160 m long. I'd heard that because of the acoustics of the place, it was possible for someone to stand on one end of the court and talk to someone on the other end of the court as if they were standing right next to each other.

We went in the afternoon on the same day we arrived in town, so there were lots of people around. Well, with the people about, it was harder to tell what we were hearing when we tried the experiment. So, we came back the early the next morning and tried it again.

It freaked me out! I couldn't believe it, even if I was expecting it and hoping it would happen. I could see him clear over on the other side, but it was like he was right next to me.

So, I love places like that, where you can see just how intelligent people were, and also realize just how much knowledge gets lost, found, lost and found, over and over again.

That's impressive @glenalbrethsen. Glad you were able to get back in the morning when the crowds had gone. sounds like the sort of place I'd love to visit! 😊

Oh, I would expect you would.

It's a little farther away to get to from where you live, but the area does have good weather down there most of the year. @lynncoyle1 knows all about that. :)

Chichen Itza is by far the most fun place to go of the ruins I've been. Very extensive and showcasing not just their knowledge of architecture, but astronomy and other sciences. Unfortunately, it's also mixed with savagery, like killing the losing team at the ball game and human sacrifices.

The next place to go after that would be Teotihuacan near Mexico City (that place is just plain huge), but places like Tulum, Coba and Uxmal are all over in the Yucatan-Quintana Roo area within reasonable travel distance of each other and would be worth spending part of a day each roaming around in.

That is a good shot, considering the circumstances surrounding it! I love the "gloomy" feel to it all...seems to suit it in some way. I've never been to Stonehenge, but who knows? Maybe one day ;)

Thank you @lynncoyle1. Stonehenge is well worth a visit and there are some even better (in the sense of being less crowded) prehistoric sites that I love to go to too. Hope you'll make it over one day. It would be lovely to meet in person! 😍

That would be wonderful!! If I ever decide on it, you'll be the first to know :)

Wonderful. What fun it would be to show you around @lynncoyle1! 😍

It feels strange not to include Brian in that sentence. He would be most welcome too, of course. I wish I could make it so. 💙 💛 💜 💚

what building behind the car? it looks like a prehistoric building

It is Stonehenge as mentioned in the title and description @longberry! 😊

It is prehistoric, about 5000 years old.

Perfect response my friend :)

Ha. ha, ha @lynncoyle1. I was trying to be polite. Did I miss the mark? 😂

hahaha no, I just knew what was going on !

😂 😙 😙

Glad you like it @madlenfox. 😊 Hope you're having a lovely Ester weekend.

Excellent @madlenfox. Glad to hear it! 😊
