Market Friday From A Wuss

New Lower Prom Market, Brighton

I had to go into town today to do some shopping and, just before I left I read @dswigle's Market Friday Post.

I didn't have much hope of finding anything interesting to post about however, as I have written about the route I was taking before.

But I was pleasantly surprised to discover that there is a new market in town, on the lower prom.

I was actually walking between the market and the sea but took myself up to the upper prom to get a bird's eye view for you.

Now, keep your eyes on the oval signs to the left of the photograph.

Those are all individual one off shops of local companies and artists that are built into the arches under the promenade. They look like this.

The arches were originally sheds in which the local fishermen kept their boats.

They were derelict for years until there were regenerated into what you see today, as part of the i360 development (which I've written about elsewhere).

Now I know you're probably wondering what those market stalls are selling but, sad to say, I didn't take any photographs of individual ones.

There weren't that many people around so I felt a bit self-conscious and wussed out.

The vast majority (all?) of them were selling food and drink. I can tell you that much.

And maybe you can forgive me as I took this extra shot for you which includes the derelict West Pier.

Oh I do like to be beside the seaside! 😁

Oh, this is just wonderful! I just love, love, love your post for the #MarketFriday. I am with you on my fondness for the salt and sand.

Those little cubbies where the boats were have been reconfigured into quite the chic place. I wouldn't mind having a shop there. Very nice! I don't mind that you didn't get the shops this time. That always leaves it open for another visit sometime down the road.

They charged to see the pier? Do tell! OMGosh.

I am so happy that you took the time to give us that view! Thank you and thank you so much for taking the time and effort to put together a #MarketFriday post.

Upped and Steemed!

Thank you @dswigle. 😁

I wouldn't mind having a shop there.

Yep. I could imagine you shopping there. There are lots of little shopping areas in Brighton and Hove that you would love.

The West Pier was a ruin for a long time but, before the arson attacks, the ballroom was still standing of some of the little Victorian Booths. So they used to do guided tours of those bits and tell you about the history.

Had I known the pier was gong to be destroyed I would probably have gone on the tour but, at the time, £15 was a bit outside my budget for such a thing.

What a great surprise to find a market. But I also like that they restored the arches and made them into stores.

Yep. It was a nice surprise @mariannewest but I was more excited by being able to write a #marketfriday post than the market itself. What Steemit does to you, eh? 😂

I know!!!!!! so funny. I feel guilty now if I don't take pictures :)

I remember those oval shaped orifices from way back in the 70's and they were pretty derelict back then. Nice to see them restored and wasn't the pier rebuilt once already?

Just followed you 'again' somehow you vanished from my follower list which I check about never lol

wasn't the pier rebuilt once already

No. It was never rebuilt @molometer. The did put some scaffolding up and stuff so that people could pay £15 to go on a guided tour of the ruin. That was before the arson attacks.

I think I've vanished from a few people's follower lists recently. Maybe they're having a clean out because of this steem-ua thing.

I'm very glad to be back on yours at least! 😁

£15 to view the wreck lol

Great that you are discovering new markets! There's nothing like tasting some great street food at the markets during the Edinburgh festivals. There aren't enough up here, but maybe that's more to do with the climate. 😁

Quite possibly @seanreilly.

Hopefully the one I found today will be there regularly although there is triathlon on this weekend so it could be something to do with that. 😊

Have a fun weekend!

That little market looks like a medieval jousting tournament with the pennants - love the view with the old pier in it. One of things I like about coastal towns id the way the railings are always painted that colour blue, it symbolises "seaside" for me.
Are those arches in Brighton? I think I've been there and have bits and pieces I've bought at different times. I used to love going to the Sunday market in the station car park. I nearly bought a set of elk antlers once (I know - don't ask) 😎

It does a bit @shanibeer. I can see what you mean. 😁

Yes the arches are in Brighton but those particular ones have only recently been renovated. There are some nearer the Palace Pier than have been open for a long time so I suspect it is those you are thinking of.

I'm a big fan of the Sunday market too although it is no longer in the stations car park. You wouldn't recognise that area now. It is full of flats and a hotel. it's totally transformed.

The market is now held at the top of the multi-story car park at the Marina. It can get a bit nippy up there when the wind is up! 😂

Elk antlers?!!!!! 😱 OK. I won't ask.

Fortunately, I didn't have a suitable means of transport so I was unable to buy them. And only £30, too! It ages since I've been to Brighton. I used to regularly visit friends in Seaford (which is when I went to the market) and I used to housesit/dogwalk for some friends in Preston Park from time to time. That all changed when I went back to full-time work. My own family come from Ramsgate, so I've tended to spend more time there in recent years. I must book in a visit. I'll bring my big coat for the nippy market :)

I must book in a visit

Let me know if you do @shanibeer and I'll see if I can organise a bit of a Steemit meet-up. 😁

Markets by the beach are always awesome. We have plenty of space to do that, in Portugal... but we underuse it.
