The accident- An original story

Joel opened his eyes after the alarm went off. He was so extremely tired all the time, and it literally felt as if he only rested his eyes for a minute. These days he had such a hard time falling asleep, and then he rolls around for what feels like hours, before he drifts off into a disturbed sleep with terrifying nightmares.   

This all started a few weeks ago after he witnessed a horrifying car accident right in front of him on the highway while on his way to work. The car in front of him burst a wheel and flipped over. It landed about two meters from his own car. He just can't get that terrible scene out of his mind.  

Joel was the first on the scene, but he was in such a state of shock, that he couldn't open the car door.  All the passengers were stuck in the vehicle until emergency services arrived. Turned out the one elderly passenger was killed instantly but the other two walked away with minor injuries. 

The scene was cleared up in a matter of minutes to ensure the flow of traffic, but something was very weird and very wrong about the whole incident. 

After the accident he tried to make more sense of it, but he couldn't find anything about the accident in the newspaper, and he literally searched every single channel and watched every news broadcast, but it was like the accident just never happened. He even phoned the police station, but they couldn't help him either.  

Perhaps he was just being paranoid or he missed something somewhere, or perhaps he just had post traumatic stress, but ever since the accident he had this feeling that he was being watched all the time. This was driving him crazy. He knew he needed to go and see someone that could possibly help him make sense of the whole thing. 

Joel phoned to report that he was not going in to work, and then dialed the number for the psychiatrist that one of the ambulance drivers gave him on the scene of the accident. The psychiatrist was able to see him at twelve, so he had a few hours left to rest before.  

He lay down again to get some much needed sleep, but it was impossible, so instead of wasting his time, he got up to make himself something to eat. Even his eating habits changed after the accident, and where he made himself a good English breakfast every morning for the last 17 years, he could not stomach that anymore. He settled for a bowl of cereal and sat down at the kitchen counter to eat.  

After breakfast he took a quick shower and looked at himself in the mirror. He suddenly wondered what he would look like with a beard, and decided not to shave. He grabbed a t-shirt and a pair of jeans and put on his sneakers. It was a big change from the tailored suit that he was wearing daily, but he felt more comfortable and for some reason he felt like it was a much needed change. 

He grabbed his car keys and opened the garage door. Within minutes he was on his way to see the woman that could help him get out of this terrible nightmare. He just hope she could.
