Insomnia:

 habitual sleeplessness; inability to sleep.

These last few months I have suffered severely from insomnia.  It is as if my brain just don't switch off.  I have always been a light sleeper, but lately it has become worse.  My partner falls asleep in less than 60 seconds, and then the snoring starts.  Oh my.... there are so many factors that play a roll in me not sleeping.

I get irritated because I can't fall asleep, then the snoring irritates me even more.  Then my brain starts to over think about all sorts of crap.  I am sure that I am able to think myself into a depression.  Finally I just lay there, wide awake staring at the ceiling!

I have tried sleeping tablets, but for some reason, they keep me awake, and has the complete opposite effect of what it should. I once was in hospital for two weeks and got minimal sleep because of the sleeping tablets they gave me, and possibly because my bed was right next to the ICU entrance. Well that is another story altogether.

I have searched high and low for remedies to let me sleep better.  I have tried reading, and that definitely doesn't help.  I have tried listening to music....but no luck.  Recently I found the perfect solution.

Meditation.  Yes.... believe it or not,  I meditate! I am busy training my mind to fall asleep. It is not such an easy process, but the fact of the matter is, I get more sleep than I am used to.  I feel better, I am more positive about life, and the overall effect is just positive.

Meditation is a practice where an individual trains the mind or induces a mode of consciousness.

Not sleeping makes me a groggy person during the day, and it has a serious negative effect on my daily routine. I have reduced energy levels and mood swings. I get irritated very easily, but not sleeping makes it worse.  It also has an effect on my appetite.  If I don't sleep I get hungry.  I eat too much before falling asleep, and that in turn cause me not to sleep.

I never knew what a great effect meditation could have on your overall health.   To meditate at that time of night, helps me sleep better and I usually feel refreshed in the morning.  I see meditation as exercise for my brain.  I found some very interesting videos online that helps me with this process that I would like to share with you.

This was the first one I watched and it definitely got the ball rolling.  This has been a great experience and I am sure that you can find a video that suits your needs.

The process of meditation is changing me as a person.  Hopefully for the better, and I hope anyone who struggles with insomnia will make use of meditation to fall asleep. Throw away those sleeping tablets, forget about all your worries, and turn to meditation.  It's the right thing to do! :)

Thanks for the suggestion, might just try that!

warm milk :) works better

I started a whole series on sleeping better, a few weeks back. I've only got to part 3, but will get back to it at some stage. Do you get up out of bed to meditate, or stay lying down? Or do you just do it before bed?

you are so right about this helping - I too have always been a light sleeper - sound of an owl farting in our woods 2 miles away would wake me up - so hubby said - my pattern has been worse since moving to Egypt - I find myself reliving the day, conversations, to do list etc etc etc ..irritating. I then started to show an interest in yoga, thanks to @saramiller, garden of eden, who posts each day and i learnt breathing from online videos. Now when I go to bed, I 'empty' out all stale air with several deep breathing techniques , then I concentrate on my breathing. Its not immediate drop off, but it has helped and calmed my mind down a notch or 2. I'm hoping that by end of year will be I will be gone in 60 seconds!!

@ladypenelope1 it's great....you are so funny...gone in 60 seconds. Ha ha ha ha ha!
