احوال کسی را پرسیدن

John inquired of Mary after her mother in hospital.

جان از مری احوال مادرش را که در بیمارستان بود، پرسید.

بعد از of، مانند مثال فوق، اسم یا ضمیر دلالت کننده بر شخص می‌آید. این اصطلاح بدون of هم به صورت inquire after به کار می‌رود. inquire into یعنی «درباره‌ی چیزی تحقیق و بررسی کردن».
