Welcome to the 67th Daily Field Note! Here you find the top post of the day, one covering each scientific field that is included by Geopolis. Since these authors put a lot of effort in writing a good post they surely deserve the extra exposure.

Geopolis is a project to promote and connect authors who write in the fields of global sciences. You can read more about the project and how to join here:

Geology: Hawaiian volcanoes - Part 5: Evolution to Atolls and Seamounts

Original post by @sooflauschig

In the last two posts I have looked at the growth of Hawaiian volcanoes. With increasing age and on their way north-westwards, away from the hotspot, the volcanoes not only stop growing due to lack of new magma input, but also get constantly worn down by continuous erosion. Hawaiian mythology phrases this as: *No sooner does Pele create an island that Nā maka o Kahaʻi begins to destroy it. Not only the water from ocean waves wear on the volcanoes, rain also erodes the volcano, creating deeply incised valleys.

Ecology: The Changing Face of Our Oceans Part 13: Underwater Mining 1

Original post by @mountainwashere

Forget space, the deep ocean floor is the Final Frontier. We know much more about- and are much better able to explore- space than the deep sea. Far more people have gone into space than have explored the true depths. And, up until fairly recently, we were extremely limited in our ability to exploit the sea. It's basically just been fishing and drilling for oil when it comes to the deeps. Now, however, we've advanced to the point where another type of resource extraction has become possible- metal. Giant tube worms, a deep sea species found clustered around hydrothermal vents. They're among the species that could be threatened by deep sea mining. There are five primary types of metal available to mine on the seafloor...

History: Unwanted history – when art becomes garbage

Original post by @tammizzle

But destroyed monuments are witnesses of the people in whose time they disappeared. After World War II, in former Yugoslavia thousands of monuments have been built in honor of the 'National liberation war' shortly called NOB. In translation that term is being used for guerrilla movements of taking down dictators. In case of Yugoslavia, this war was used to take down Nazism and fascism. During the 90's half of the monuments honoring NOB heroes were destroyed. Some of those artworks were pieces of high quality art. The question is why ...
