Daily Field Notes #48

in #geopolis8 years ago

Welcome to the 48th Daily Field Note! Here you find the top post of the day, one covering each scientific field that is included by Geopolis. Since these authors put a lot of effort in writing a good post they surely deserve the extra exposure.

Geopolis is a project to promote and connect authors who write in the fields of global sciences. You can read more about the project and how to join here:

Geography: History and geography in primary education

In my opinion geography and history are one of the most valuable courses a child can follow as a good understanding of the planet and its society is crucial for jumping in to the real world. You can read more on the importances of these courses in this post

Sometimes it is debated whether it is convenient to include history and geography as learning materials at basic levels. To determine whether the contents of the story are useful and necessary for elementary school students, they must first consider whether the content meets some of the educational needs of the recipients and if, on the other hand, they are within their capacity.

In this sense, it must be taken into account that both geography and history fully respond to the training needs of students and constitute a valid component in an educational project that is not based solely on...

Geology: Primitive Mantle Pockets: How Isotopes Help Geologists Peer Into the Center of the Earth

Geologists are always trying to understand the inner working of our planet. Thanks to new isotopic data they managed to get new information on what is going on beneath our feet.

Original post by @keephy

In this post, I'll be discussing how - through the study of isotopes in igneous rock below Réunion Island - modern volcanism can be correlated to geological events that occurred during the Earth's formation 4.5 billion years ago. The island of Réunion is technically a hotspot, whose eruption 66 Ma created the flood basalts of the found in India. It was roughly 4.5 billion years ago when heat produced by Earth's formation process began to melt extensive portions of the planet. When this occurred, Earth began to separate into two layers due to a differential of density between materials. The heaviest layer that began to sink was iron metal, which consequently created the core. As this occurr...

Ecology: The Changing Face of Our Oceans Part 8: Swim in Oil, Eat Trash

Although we owe a lot to the petrochemical industry, It also left, and is still leaving, a big scar on our planet and its ecosystems. How exactly this affects organisms can be found in this article.

Original post by @mountainwashere

Civilization's dependence on petrochemicals could hardly be less commented on. We used them to jumpstart the industrial revolution and provide us with cheap energy to fuel growth and technological advancement. They also, of course, have fueled climate change, the most pressing environmental issue humanity faces. Rising temperatures in the ocean have done considerable damage. They're also largely responsible for ocean acidification, climate change's evil younger twin. Petrochemicals are harming the oceans in a much more direct way as well, however, in the forms of oil spills and plastic debris.
