Civet Espresso, a world class drink, devoured generally in the Gulf countries and Europe, is sold for between Rs 20,000 - 25,000 per kg abroad.

India, Asia’s third-largest producer and exporter of coffee, has initiated the production of the world’s most elite coffee, made from the poop of civet cat, on a small-scale in Coorg district of Karnataka.

The Civet coffee, also known as Luwark coffee, is expensive because it is produced not from the normal coffee beans, but from the digested coffee beans excreted by civet cats. The natural enzymes in Civet’s stomach, enhances the bean flavor, and that is why this coffee is unique. The feces or excrement of the civet cat are collected, processed and then sold for the coffee production.

It is reported to be more nutritious and highly priced because of its uncommon processing, the high cost involved in sourcing the animal poop, the wastage encountered during processing and the required quality certification.

A state-of-the-art start-up has begun in the country’s largest coffee-growing Karnataka state. Coorg Consolidated Commodities (CCC) has made an initial beginning to make this elite coffee on a small scale and has also decided to open a bresto to serve the brew locally.

"At first, 20 kg of civet espresso was created. Subsequent to setting up the start-up firm, 60 kg was delivered in 2015-16 and 200 kg a year ago. We trust that a large portion of about a tonne can be generated from the new product to be gathered from October," Narendra Hebbar, one of the owners of CCC, told PTI.

The fascinating espresso is being sold locally under the brand 'Ainmane', he said that the organization has just a single outlet at Club Mahindra Madikeri Resort where it offers privately delivered espresso, flavours and different items.

This coffee is truly organic and is produced naturally because the plantations are located closed to forests and the cats willingly come to eat ripe coffee bean cherries, unlike in other countries where the cats are caged and forcefully fed with beans.

It is being sold at Rs 8,000 for each kg here, while it is accessible at Rs 20,000 - 25,000 for each kg abroad.

When part owner, Narendra Hebbar was asked if the organization intends to trade, Hebbar said it was not practical to export yet, due to the high cost of certifications and the present low level of production. Quoting him from his interview, “We need to advance this espresso locally. We will open a bistro soon. We will offer 'Coorg Luwark Coffee' alongside different assortments like Cappuccino and Expresso," he said.

A senior Coffee Board official likewise affirmed that Civet feline espresso is being delivered in little amounts in parts of Coorg and Chamarajnagar regions.

"It is produced in little quantity by people. They deliver and showcase it as a famed espresso, a specialty coffe which is exceptionally costly," he said.
