Home Schooling UK government inspection, Heres how it went....

in #homeschooling7 years ago (edited)

My meeting left me feeling a bit weird here's why

Preparation

I had set up everything as i said i had done in the past visits and collected some of the evidence from this year.

We had dehydrated fruit and onions, all thier exercise books that we had gone through, Mavis Beacon typing tutor, a stop start animation camera and program, meccano, both their boxes with all their work they had done and my diary as you can see on top of the pink and blue boxes and books we had been reading.

The house was cleaned and a pot of coffee put on, nothing says your welcome like a coffee when you visit.

I had the children in the front room getting on with, a nice little project to find out why we all get a brain freeze and that was something from the steemit community I had read the other night.

What we talked about

When the lady came round she was very pleasant and smiled and said hello to everyone and i made a coffee.

We started to talk about what i had been doing for the last year/visit and began going through some of the items that i had no proof of at the table, such as visits to museums (other than a couple of brochures), helping with the camper van on little jobs that were safe, buying everyone bikes and regularly cycling into town, who they visited and their interactions on a social scale, clubs and hobbies.

So far so good, and then we got into their academic books of which i made sure were dated and backed up with corresponding dates to my diary talking about what and why we went through things.  She noticed that my daughter who had a bad learning experience from school, constantly back classed and then bullied was doing the same year as her younger brother and asked,

"Why is Lucy not doing key stage 3 yet?"  obviously i gave her the honest answer which was that she is 2 years behind in her understanding and therefore works well with her younger brother at the same stage. Of which then came the question of were they being taught together and i said yes and that they worked well.

I also then had a whole raft of questions relating to Lucy and special needs tutors etc. which were not helping at her previous schools and there was no funding to help her in the end.  I felt uncomfortable between the prospect of having to send her to school to get specialist teaching or imposing regular visits at the house and does she think Lucy needs another, and what are her intentions on this line of questioning.  Was glad when she moved on with that subject.

She asked if i was into the self sustainability lifestyle and that was covered by saying i was a gamekeeper and my wife was brought up on a farm so nature was just part of who we were.  I could see her looking at the other books on the shelves and making notes when we spoke and she challenged me about my written feedback (or suggested not enough of it) of which she found in their books and on their work.  Bearing in mind this is evidence i don't have to provide for her or have a legal requirement to show the childrens work, but i do it for these types of situations.  She found lots more feedback on everything mostly and had to scrap her comment from the form.   The other gripe that she had was that the work in the childrens personal work boxes needed to be more organised so she can look at the work and had i thought about chronological order.  Then she noticed all the dates on the sheets.

At this point when she had done enough digging with me she then turned to the children and started asking them if they are looking forward to Christmas, if they had the choice to do anything after they had finished their school work today where would they like to go, unfortunately both children clammed up and we had to prompt them.

She said she was happy with the work i had been doing and gave me a date for another year so that was good but i did feel different this time around.   On this occassion i felt as though i had somehow been profiled to some degree that i had not had before.

Our previous visit was really good with a very informal and relaxed pace to the point where you were not particularly worried when you see them again.  So this one felt harder to get through, more of dodging bullets than tea and cake.  Perhaps some of you have had something a little similar recently, i would definitely like to hear some feedback on anyone elses experience.

Conclusion

I stand by my previous post regarding the preparation i usually do and it does work, the education part is covered (other than the filing issue, smirk) I was asked more this time about proving their work had been done and more interest in the curriculum even though i personally had gone way beyond legal requirements to cover my back they now appeared to be expecting it?

My view after this experience is that if i had not spent all year collecting every scrap of evidence to meet her criteria then there could have been an issue.  My experience may not have any relevance on anyones elses visit or experience just how i saw this one for my family.

Thanks for reading and look forward to any input.

I'm a homeschooler too. Nice to meet you!
I'm very, very fortunate here in BC, Canada because I think that we have the best choices for home learning in the world ... you can do as I do and be a "registered" homeschooler with zero government involvement ... or you can "enroll" as a home learner with a school, and get a teacher's oversight usually involving weekly reporting along with some government funds to pay for curriculum and activities.
I used to "enroll" to get the money, but now I "register" as the money just isn't worth the headache in my opinion.
Here's a post I did a while back if you feel like reading it ...

Hi there, nice to meet you also, i just looked at the article and enjoyed it and tried to reply but i couldn't it was about 3 months old. Still i gave it an upvote and thanks for the comment on this one too. In the UK we have been quite relaxed about the homeschooling as it wasn't really done in sufficient strength but i am finding more and more parents are really getting upset with the way they are treated by the schools and have started home schooling as well. I think the government is concerned that they will lose control of portions of community who don't participate and heaven forbid we should think differently about things. And this whole fundamentalist issue has encouraged a watchful eye on those who are taking their kids out. I will have to jump through hoops for a long time yet unfortunately, just not as many as sending them to school......yet.

Even with the hoops, I agree that it would be much better than sitting in a desk at a school for many hours a day.

Hi, is in the Uk a mandatory inspection for homeschoolers? I always thought that there was no obligations, no control?

Hi there, sorry to burst your bubble but Government don't like to give us full control. There have always been safeguards that we must comply with.
When i started homeschooling i did not have to stick to the curriculum, however if they come and pay you a visit and you haven't followed the curriculum for their age group, such as Key Stage 3 or whatever they can suggest that you are not delivering an efficient standard of education.
I find that the council will send you a letter saying they intend to make a visit on a certain date to evaluate their progress which is fine, although if you have no evidence of learning then again they can suggest your failing their education.

By law you do not have to accept a visit from the council, but denying them leads to the question why and then you will find yourself having to answer to social services as the council will pass on the suspicion that there is some kind of issue.
If i was naive and believed that my local council would like to help and support my child get the best from their home education then i would be truly foolish.
I am meeting and hearing about an increasing amount of pressure from the government on homeschoolers, the latest last week where they want to pass a law to make all homeschoolers jump through the same hoops as a funded public school.

This was propaganised by the papers and news hyping up more fear that fundamental religious schools were illegally radicalising the children. Now extremist religious views is anyone who actually follows the bible, and to a certain extent the muslims too, they are being used to clamp down on free thinking homeschoolers and finding any excuse to intervene more in your life.

Another friend missed an appointment at the doctors for her son (there is more about his health and attending public school previously) and the doctor sent a letter of concern to social services and now she is being investigated for endangering her child and being unfit for homeschooling and possibly as a parent.

To teach your children is one of the most rewarding experiences i could have and the benefits will last yours and your childrens lives. However like all freedoms these days the ever increasing encroachment of big brother and the lunatic left will find a way eventually to take that right away in my opinion.

I promise i have not written all this to dissuade you from doing home schooling in any way, but as an ex teacher and assessor of both the councils, HMRC, DWP in my previous profession i can see what they are up to.
I always get at least a page of handwritten work a day and put comments, encouragement and a date on it. I also add many dates to anything i do and make notes of whatever type of learning they have undertaken. This is not my need but for the government need.

It would be wise to ensure you have some proof regularly as a buffer against any suggestions that you haven't been doing enough or the right curriculum. Cover yourself, my last visit made me nervous and i had everything they wanted and more.

I am still waiting for the letter for last year to visit, although i have some disturbing gossip that they have been dropping in unannounced to catch homeschoolers out and it has been working apparently.

American homeschooling problems after i made my comment to you. This video i found this morning

Thanks for keeping me informed. There is much going on in the US !

No problem, always happy to help. Take care Sean

May I ask if this is also happening in the UK ?

All i can get at the moment is this which is from the https://services.parliament.uk/bills/2017-19/homeeducationdutyoflocalauthorities.html
Summary of the Home Education (Duty of Local Authorities) Bill [HL] 2017-19
A Bill to make provision for local authorities to monitor the educational, physical and emotional development of children receiving elective home education, and for connected purposes

Doesn't that bill sound lovely? This is how they are going to remove many children from homeschooling in the UK in my opinion.

Ok, thanks!

Check my newest post on homeschooling, just keeping you informed as i find it.
Sean
