Security shred

in #cybersecurity5 years ago

You're looking at about seven years worth of financial documents like my superannuation fund, a couple of mortgages, salary payslips, bank statements, tax returns and even my [superseded] Last Will and Testament document. All shredded and ready for the bin.

I've always been careful with document and personal security and have used some inventive ways to destroy it. Ok, not all that inventive...Fuel and matches most often.

A couple of years ago I invested in a cross cut shredder though. It cuts strips then shreds each strip into smaller piece's about an inch long as you can see. Not only is it good for document-security it is fun...Kind of satisfying in a way.

When investing, or in life in general, there always seems to be loads of paperwork. Most contains information specific and personal to us and in the wrong hands could lead to problems. Big problems. So, we dispose of it responsibly and do what we can to ensure our privacy and financial security. But what happens in the digital age where much of our personal information is simply zero's and one's on a computer server and typically out of our reach? A question I can't answer.

Keeping track of my crypto keys is of constant concern to me, especially since I have begun to invest some of my own money. I don't really care too much if I lose crypto I blogged for but the stuff I paid for? I need to ensure its security. I'm always concerned someone will come across my keys somehow, despite using a secure password saver program and backing them all up on paper in one of my safes at home. And what about my general information...How secure is it?

I don't want to disappoint here but I don't have the answer...This blog is one long question really; A question that boils down to how secure is my information? I know I can shred paper but how do I ensure my security in other areas when I don't know who has it, where it is and have any access to it at all. Not just my crypto keys, but any information that pertains to me and my financial matters.

I believe that moving forward this is going to become more of an issue, and concern, for many more of us who hold crypto and fiat investments both. Security. Securing any digital information be it crypto keys or internet banking on our smart phones is an issue is it not?

I could be missing the point here but with everything being so integrated through the internet and computers I have some concern about the security of my information. Can anyone shed some light on the matter for me and possibly enlighten me about how it all may work from a security perspective moving forward?

Shredding paper is lots of fun. I think we all turn into children that just want to see cause and effect as the paper comes out the other end in crinkly little strips. A bunch of mine got turned into a SWAT truck pinata I made for my son's birthday party one year. Very purifying - I kept thinking about those old bills and annoying records I was glad to be done with as I soaked their shreds in paste.

Shedding paper leaves one with a similar satisfaction to popping bubble wrap! 😉

I do the same about once a year as well. Incredible how much information is out there. I tend to move it mostly digitally then separate it physically from me using a number of different alternatives. Still not perfect but there is always risk no matter what we do.

Agreed with the risk statement...Each of us has so much information out there and out of our control to secure. Oh well, we can only do what's within our ability I guess.
