Getting Serious With Indoor Gardening

in #esteem4 years ago (edited)

Greetings Steemians,

I've been pretty busy the past week tending to some offline things. It's always important to find balance in everything we do in life, and Steem needed to take a bit of a backseat while I get some things in order.

One of the things I've been working on is my in-house plants. They were not appreciating the compact fluorescent lights, so I had to step it up for them.

With a bit of research on LED's, (Light Emitting Diodes) I discovered that they've become less expensive over the years, and are highly efficient with bringing a full spectrum of the vital light a plant needs for vegetative and flowering growth. They are extremely cost effective for electricity, and have a very long life expectancy.

Perhaps I will make an extensive post in the future regarding light spectrum, and how spectrum is measured (it is quite interesting), but for this post, I'm just going to show you these cool lights illuminating my beautiful succulents.

I read that most people find these lights unpleasant, and that is an enigma to me, perhaps it's the hippy in me, but I find the colors rad.

The first is the whole set up I have going on. The self standing lamp light is moved for photo convenience, but I keep it closer to the plants:

They call this color blurple, for the blue/red light creating a purple hue.

Here is a face on photo of the light:

Difficult to discern in the photo, but it's mostly a mixture of blue and red LED's, with a couple of green LED's in the center.

This is the actual bulb, which you can obtain from Walmart for about 6 dollars USD per.

Also you can see, I'm using 3 of them.

I made this small in-home greenhouse of out a zip up bedding package I had laying around from a past purchase at Walmart, some pizza boxes, packaging tape, tin foil, and that's it.. I measured it all by hand and just created awesomeness.

A close up of the inside :)

The mystery plant (Which is no longer a mystery, but a Philodendron due to @owasco recognizing it and telling me what it is. A big thank you to her!) It's doing great and growing like a weed. The shoot you see in the middle will indeed be a new leaf!

This one especially is loving the LED's.

My graptosedum-bronze I had to behead unfortunately due to etiolation and transplanted the head. I have a bunch of babies as well.

You can see where the beheading took place in the flowers and garden container. It's still doing good though.

(
It's hard to see under this light, but they are getting a nice "sun blush" which is desired with succulents, and the new growth is condensing, very nice.

The babies aren't doing so great, and it's due to an improper soil mix, which I will get sorted out in the next few weeks. They will survive under my loving care no doubt.

My plants telepathically communicated to me that they wanted some blood meal so I've added a little to the soil as well.

These are clipping from a Crassula ovata which unfortunately I had to dispose of the mother, due to a fungus gnat infestation. They killed the mother, and there was nothing I could do.

This was the mother. I was sad to see her go, but I will nurture the clippings into adults, and she will live on vicariously through them.

That is all I have to share for now Steemians, I hope you are all doing well!

Thanks brother.

I probably shouldn't go too crazy, or my closet will look like a forest in no time, but I do want to grow some vegetables as well and get some kind of shelving system going.

The Philodendron popped up in that pot there, which was left behind by an old woman downstairs who passed away some months back. I had the pot sitting for close to two months with no water at all, then one day I saw a sprout and just started watering it lol. The wonders of mother nature :)

Nice to see you man, thanks for stopping by.

I mean those cuttings arent the children, they are genetically identical copies of the original plant.

Clones indeed, thank you for the correction :)

Good point, but a new generation all the same. I'd think of them that way.

Hello my friend, @futuremind. It's great to be able to re-read your posts after a few days of your vacuum. Wow ... growing plants indoors must be very interesting. I have never practiced it because in our area it is considered strange. maybe because we still have very large land for the plants. I can't wait to see your succulent plants grow big, sir. Maybe you can post it in the future. Have a nice day, Sir ..

Thank you my friend @elianaelisma,
Growing plants outdoors is better for the plants. Artificial environment is not preferred by me, but in dense cities it's easier in many ways.

Thank you for your kind words.

Have a great day miss.

Looks like ur profile pic^^

Haha, I didn't even notice that, you're right! :)

Thanks for stopping by bro.

Great idea

Thank you :)

You inspired me to do the same.

I likely won't start one for weeks but at some point I'm going to do a similar project.

That's great @rentmoney!

I'm happy I inspired you :)

I would love to see what your set up looks like after you get started.
