The Kiasu Culture
Kiasu is a very local word used in Singapore.
It is a word that describes the fear of losing out to others.
Most Singaporean parents are really concerned about the performance of their children in school.
As a result, tuition centre and enrichment companies are able to gain much popularity and earn good money from parents.
Most parents would send their children for extra lessons after school hours.
The working adults may also have fear in losing out in showing their competency at their work place as they are afraid of losing out to their colleagues and they want to be above one another.
The cars that one drives and the houses that one lives in can all become comparison for people who are being labelled as Kiasu.
I guess Kiasu provides a word to summarise the high competitive nature of people in this modern age as well as people getting too self-centre for their own selfish reasons.
Many Singaporeans may often remind one another not to be Kiasu but have a more gracious and giving spirit.
