Making lesson fun for students

We may teach but our students may not have learnt.

Many teachers use their textbooks like a bible without bringing their lessons alive and fun for their students.

Making lesson fun and engaging can really help students to remember what they need to learn effectively when the key information is summarised and presented.

Make lesson alive

I really like this video. At the start of the video, the teacher told his class to call him Alex rather than addressing him formally.

When he saw his students with the bored look, he took his students out of the classroom for lesson.

He dressed up often to illustrate the different history characters and his students enjoyed his lessons.

I can see the joy of learning in his students as his students laughed about the history facts that he presented in a funny way.

As teachers, we must know our students and teach the way they want to be taught.

Many experienced teachers may brag about their accomplishment in helping many students in the past to achieve good results but the same old methods may not work well with the advancement of technology.

With the advancement of technology, students are exposed to wide range of media and information so they often find it more entertaining to go online since classroom lessons may lack the fun element to engage them.

Belief

In the video, the school leader actually saw what the teacher was doing in class.

He scolded him for acting like a clown and he commented that the teacher was there to teach and not to be a clown.

Alex has a strong belief that lessons must be fun and he was fired eventually.

His school leader took his class temporarily and gave his class a surprised test.

During the test, the students were laughing as they answered the questions as they remembered what Alex did during lessons to make his lessons fun for them.

When his school leader marked the scripts, most students did very well.

The school leader reflected and wanted Alex back in school as he realised his own mistake after he realised the effectiveness of making lessons fun for learning.

When I was teaching the weakest class Science, I got my pupils to act out the water cycle many years ago.

Teachers, who walked past, found it weird especially the noise level was high.

In the end, most of my students managed to clear their Science examination.

With the focus of the joy of learning, more teachers are willing to make their lessons fun.

I am no longer the weird one but there are more teachers who are willing to share ideas to make lessons fun.

I really do not mind to be the clown if my students can learn and enjoy the process of learning.

In conclusion

I am quite sure when you watch the video, you are inspired by the teacher in the video.

He had brought lessons alive for his students and he was able to achieve his learning objectives for each lesson at the same time.

We should reflect how we can teach so that our students can learn more effectively.
