Rule Freaks and Racists. 😲

in #racism7 years ago (edited)

Haha, this is funny:

Author shamed a metro worker for eating on the train. Now her book deal is in jeopardy.

It's like a comedy of errors from all sides.

Worrying about someone eating on the train is pretty strange. It's fake outrage, basically.

The rule against eating on the train serves a purpose, sure. There would more often be spills and messes. So the purpose has to do with Metro not wanting to have to clean it and replace seats more often. It seems reasonable that there would be this rule. But as a passenger, you aren't genuinely bothered at all.

So she's being uptight and weird here.

She's feeling wronged and offended by something that didn't actually affect her. She's a tattle tale too.

But believing it had anything to do with race, and that she wouldn't have done the same if it was a white person or someone of her own race, is just your imagination and based on nothing.

Being black and being female doesn't mean it's impossible that you might bump into this woman's hysterical reaction about someone eating. You're playing the same course as the rest of us.

I wonder if some people just think too often about race, and it's easy for that to be the first thing that comes to their mind, for all conceivable situations.

Viewing people and judging events based on what races are involved, is really the essence of being a racist.

It isn't racist in the sense that it does a lot of damage or is on par with historical ways of being racist that we read about in school. But it's the 2019, softer version of it.

“We do not condone her actions and hope Natasha learns from this experience that black women feel the effects of systematic racism the most and that we have to be allies, not oppressors,” California Coldblood said in a statement Friday. By Saturday afternoon, the publisher announced it will postpone the book’s publication date “while we further discuss appropriate next steps to officially cancel” it.

So are you suggesting if it was someone of a different race eating on the train, your response here would be different?

That's racist.

If some people could be tweeted and called out for eating on a train, but a black woman can't be, then you believe in black female privilege.

So either her actions are deplorable because they're deplorable, or they're not. Incorporating a person's race in a "rule freak tweets photo of someone eating on train" situation is just really low-level and dumb.

“Would you still go ahead and buy a book if you know it was written by a bigot who went out of her way to get an African American lady fired for eating on her way to work?” one reviewer wrote on Goodreads, where “They Called Me Wyatt” had an average rating of 1.43 stars and more than 1,500 reviews. “I asked myself this question, then decided I’d rather give my money to someone more deserving.”

Sounds kinda like you're going out of your way to financially harm someone for something really trivial too 😆😆

Oh and since she's Jordanian, and minority women have a hard time or whatever, you're racist and a bigot and awful etc and I don't condone of your actions one bit tsk tsk 😡😡😡

😆🙈

It's like the emotionally reactive Revolution is consuming itself here.

FWIW I bet it was a white person who wrote this.

White people are as guilty as anyone of this stuff. It's good that people know racism is wrong and don't want to be a racist. But some people seem insecure about it, to the point where they have to use fake outrage and any cheap opportunity to signal "hey look, I'm not racist, I'm mad about this!".

(But, again, judging events and judging what is or isn't acceptable based on race.. means that you're racist.)

And you don't actually help anyone by babying them and suggesting different standards should apply to them.

You might help them in the moment, but you hurt them long-term. (Which is more or less the common thread throughout all leftist, emotionally reactive ideas.)

Everything from the business cycle and monetary policy to social justice stuff like this is basically a battle of short-term vs long-term.

Long-term, the way to have real harmony and balance and co-existence amongst different races is to stop trying to apply different standards based on what race somebody is.

To stop being racist. (And then there isn't racism. Imagine that.)
