THE SILENCING OF ALEX JONES

in #steem6 years ago (edited)

The President Donald Trump hostile mainstream media has finally gotten their wish as Alex Jones and Infowars were banned from YouTube, iTunes, Spotify and a host of other distribution platforms. Under the guise of 'hate speech" one of the most prominent alternative media voices in the world has been removed from public view on major platforms - prompting a fierce debate about the power of social media companies in modern times.

My take on this is that corporations have a right to ban individuals on their respective platforms for many reasons. While this isn't necessarily a freedom of speech issue, it is definitely a censorship issue. Freedom of speech would imply that the government is making it illegal for people to express themselves in a variety of different ways. However, here we have an issue where the government is supposedly not involved. For the record, I don't agree with a lot of what Alex Jones says, but I do believe he should not be censored because a certain group of executives have decided that he is a threat to their platform.

But is there a point of monopolization, when they become so large that people don't really have a "real" alternative?

Shouldn't there be some sort of regulation or legislation of these platforms, once they reach a point of "no return", if u know what I mean?

It's a tough one...
