This is my entry into this month’s PHC Top 3 contest.

This months topic is Extraterrestrial Movies

My Nominations are:

Nomination Number One

The Bamboo Saucer (1968)

My Reasons for the Nomination

I found this on a TV late movie one night after I’d been partying and had taken something that warps and enhances everything… a lot. I watched the whole movie, (was glued to the TV actually), and it really made an impression on me about how cool it would be to find a spaceship that Aliens brought here, (but then died), and then getting inside it and trying to figure out how to fly it around. (Especially if you had taken something earlier.)

I think it was the first time it occurred to me how completely different an alien spaceship's controls would be and whether there would be buttons to push or knobs to turn, or if their controls would be unrecognizable as controls to us. This movie, with the aid of something I consumed, made for a memory I will never forget. The extraterrestrial character and star of the movie is the flying saucer, since the Aliens aboard it had all died.

The link is for the complete movie on Youtube for free, if you're interested in trying to figure out why I liked it that night.

Nomination Number Two

The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951)

My Reasons for the Nomination

This was the first science fiction movie I saw as a very young kid. From watching it that time, somehow it ended up getting etched in my memory as being significant, I guess, along with all the other significant things that were worthy of memory etching status. Of course, I was so young when I saw it, that a lot of what I recall from watching was that Michael Rennie was from outer space, and that he had a robot with him that was very powerful.

I don’t think I even knew what “outer space” or a “planet” was at that age, so I wasn’t shocked about that, but the robot was the main attraction for me anyway. I was really into robots. I found out later in life that this is/was a very good movie. I think they made a new one, but this is the original. Michael Rennie and Patricia Neal were big stars, so it wasn’t a cheaply made BS sci-fi movie.

What Klaatu, (Rennie’s character), tells the earthlings, is that if they don’t stop having wars, the robot will wipe planet earth out because war-mongering earth people will be a threat to the all the totally peaceful others in the universe. So I guess the “moral” to the story is that someday, (hopefully), all the greedy people will stop wanting to get more of what other people have, all the murderers will stop murdering, cold turkey, all of those who are power hungry will give up on the idea of controlling people and become nice all of a sudden, and then Klaatu and his robot won’t destroy us.

No darn it, I made a mistake. All of the nasty things that the fine people mentioned above can't stop themselves from pursuing, can continue as usual. It’s just WARS that Klaatu and the other space-peaceniks are miffed about, and certainly, we all know that individuals who simply exhibit traits of greed, lack of ethics and a thirst for power have nothing to do with why there are wars.

Nomination Number Three

2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)

My Reasons for the Nomination

I’ve always thought of this movie as the king of movies about space/science fiction, and one which had me confused for years. So, in the movie it’s revealed that there is intelligent life out there elsewhere than just on earth, but it’s up to the viewer to come to the conclusion of whether it’s Aliens, a god or whatever else that’s helped us evolve from the ape man to the awesome, extremely highly intelligent beings we have obviously become.

The first time I saw the movie was several years after it was first shown. I was pretty impressed with all the effects but I had no clue what the story was revealing as it went on. I had seen A Clockwork Orange before seeing 2001: A Space Odyssey, and there are similarities in the way the two movies made me feel. I guess the cool thing about it is that 2001: A Space Odyssey came from what was originally a short story.

Looks like very good entries here my friend.
I think that one day I should also sit down to watch an alien movie.
Blessings!

The first movie is pretty good, but like I explained, the saucer is the alien presence in the movie because the aliens piloting the craft all died. It's inside Communist China, so it's a dangerous mission just getting to the saucer's location, (In 1968 we publicly recognized how bad they were). The Bamboo Saucer's free on youtube, and you can't beat that! It would be a good first one, except with 1960s cheesy effects :) Blessings to you!

Thank you for the information, but we don't have enough data to watch YouTube my friend. We are on a limited data contract.
Hope your weekend is good.
Blessings!

Oooh, these are fantastic choices @free-reign! I can see why Alf definitely doesn't appeal to you after reading this! I'm not familiar with the first one at all, but it sounds really interesting especially with your personal experience thrown in. It does really boggle the mind to think how different an alien aircraft really would be from our own in terms of control panel and other mechanical aspects.

I don't know why I didn't even think of your second choice, but it is a total classic! Very well done. I think your last choice is also brilliant. Top notch choices all around!

Thank you! I understand the entertainment value of the likable extraterrestrial characters, which adds elements of comedy and also allows for emotional scenes, but when they do it with alien life, in my mind they are distracting from reality, maybe intentionally. Who knows? I've watched the movie again a year ago or two, and it did not deliver the same experience as it had that night long ago. :)

All three films are movies that have had a lasting effect on me, especially The Day the Earth Stood Still. Not a lot of movies do that to me.

Thanks for these awesome suggestions for our contest this month! We've given you an upvote and logged your nominations, ready for the dpoll - keep an eye on our blog for the dpoll post!

Remember to transfer 50% of the post payout as SBD to @phctop3 with a link to your entry in the memo, otherwise it won't be eligible. This is the minimum entry fee, there is no maximum. You can add as much as you like to your initial fee to give you bigger potential rewards.

Great choices @free-reign

I confess that the only one I have watched is 2001. I have watched the new version of The Day the Earth Stood Still so I know of the plot line. I'm sure the original was better because they usually are.

The first movie is definitely a new one on me though. I am intrigued. I will check it out on youtube.

Is 2001 an extraterrestrial movie? I guess if we are considering the Monolith, life outside of our planet, then it is.

Really good to have you along again, great choices and best of luck.

Thanks @phctop3, and I know how you feel, because the majority of the ones in others' posts, I have not seen either. This has never been a favorite genre of mine. Robots were there most interesting thing in sci-fi movies for me, after the Boris Karloff Frankenstein monster, that is.

Yes, as in The Bamboo Saucer, where I said the saucer is the alien presence since the alien lives were lost, in 2001, the whole movie is about the extraterrestrials guiding us along our evolutionary path, with each appearance of the monolith, the alien presence.

So the instructions say to send it "all in sbd," but the graphic you sent me last time, includes an amount of steem or SP also. I'm still a bit confused as to how to calculate what total amount I'm supposed to send "all in sbd" when it also includes either steem or steem power.

Hey @free-reign

Good point. I forgot to change the comment that confirms your entry. That still says pay all SBD. We only changed the main post. Sorry about that but thanks for highlighting it.

You are correct that we need whatever your payout will be. At the moment ; if you set your post payout to 50/50, everyone is being paid 50% SP and 50% made up mostly of liquid steem and a tiny amount of SBD. So for our contest, you keep the SP and pay us the other 50% made up of the liquid steem and the small amount of SBD.

It is confusing and a lot easier when steem pays out in SBD only but for now we have to go through this.

I hope I've cleared that up. Feel free to ask if you have any further questions.

Cheers

G

Ok @phctop3, I'm still not getting how to do this. Where can I see the same type of graphic for this post, that you included when you informed me last time that shows the sbd and the liquid steem for that post? All I see here is the 1.85 total for the post. The graphic you sent has them broken down into the three types I think. I have no idea where to look for that.

I've always had my payout thing set to 50/50.

Hey @free-reign, no worries man, all this information is available in your steemit wallet, author payout section, which is here.

I've taken the screen shot from your wallet which is showing the post payout to be 0SBD, 2.222 STEEM and 2.223 SP.

The SP automatically goes in to your account but the 2.222 STEEM is what is needed for the entry fee (I've highlighted in the blue brackets below).

Hope that helps :)

Ok thanks. I have sent the 2.222 steem to @phctop3.

Thanks a lot man! Good luck! 🙏

Good choices. Got to love the HAL 9000! I will have to do this as well!!

We would love to have you join us with your choices! You have plenty of time as we have extended the deadline this month to the 11th. :)

Thanks! Sadly, I believe I just recently read that the guy that voiced Hal, died.

You have got me here @free-reign. I have never heard of your first pick. Another to add to my list to check out. The other 3 are awesome. I even liked the remake with Keanu Reeves of 'The Day The Earth Stood Still' Both were really good. To me anyway.

I didn't think many (if anyone) would have seen Bamboo Saucer, lol. My seeing it was a chance of fate as it became part of that whole experience I had that night. :)

Howdy sir free-reign! Oldies but goodies! Well, I don't know about your first choice since I haven't seen it. Have you seen it since? It would be interesting to hear the comparison of it then and now. lol.

The others are classics for their own reasons of course but these are really good selections!

Yes, I've watched it on Youtube and it just isn't the same as when I was under the influence of a substance that night many years ago. I knew the day after watching it the first time that I'd probably gotten too excited about everything I'd seen, and my mental state at the time influenced and enhanced everything that I thought was cool about the movie by about a hundred times at least. :)

lol! That sounds like it would be tempting to get under the influence again and watch more movies! Like the best way to watch movies ever!

Haha! It was the best and most informative experience for seeing a lot of things in a different way for me back when I saw the movie, but unfortunately, it's illegal, although they have started allowing it to be used in testing again for its usefulness in aiding with some mental issues, like debilitating depression for example.

Oh I see, very interesting sir free-reign, thanks for the explanation.

Being a cowboy, I figure you'll understand this wonderful song. You've likely heard it before, but even if you did, you may not have picked up on what really goes on in this story. Listen closely to the story in this song and what happens, especially once the horse jumps...

Haha! Howdy sir free-reign! That's a great song, highly entertaining! I hadn't heard it before tonight. yeah the horse jumps off the cliff and does he say they fall about a mile down? lol. But he loses her again!

Thanks for sending this, it's a darn good one!

Yep, he says they fell, "About a mile down I'd say." Into a "pool of water, about 6 feet wide and 1 foot deep." They "hit and splashed it dry," - that's when he lost his hold and she got away.
