What is Plagiarism? It is the used of people's intellectual property - work or creativity without adequate acknowledgement. In other words, it is also,
"the appropriation of another person's work, be it text or image, without any attempt to give them credit. The goal of the plagiarist is to make it appear as if themselves are the source of the work". Source.
Plagiarism is a punishable offense. It can happen in different ways, namely;
- "Verbatim, this is word for word quotation without clear acknowledgement.
- Cutting and pasting from the Internet without clear acknowledgement.
- Paraphrasing the work of others by altering a few words and changing their order, or by closely following the structure of their argument.
- Failure to acknowledge assistance, it is very important to clearly acknowledge all assistance that has been contributed to the production of a work or a project." Source
From the above, plagiarism can be classified into different types. They are:
"-Direct Plagiarism,
-Mosaic Plagiarism,
-Accidental plagiarism,
-Self-plagiarism,
-Paraphrasing plagiarism".

Consequences of Plagiarism.
Plagiarism is clearly an act of dishonesty. To use other people intellectual product without giving them the due credit is offensive. Plagiarism is a crime, therefore there are consequences that comes with it.
- Poor or fail grade: In the case of a student caught in the act of plagiarism, he will be penalized accordingly.
- Lost of integrity: If an author is involved in plagiarism, his work will lost integrity leading to reduced patronage or abandonment.
- Fine or imprisonment: Different countries and iinstitutions have different ways of punishing those that are found guilty of plagiarism.
- Removal from a Social media platform: Like in the Steemit media platform, users are warned against plagiarism, defaulters are likely to be ejected from the platform.
Plagiarism is a crime. By all means, it should be avoided.
