Mindset #17 - Three Reasons Your Blog Sucks

Most likely your blog sucks because you aren’t putting in the work. Quite frankly, the problem most likely isn’t wrong with your blog, your content, or the platform you’re using. The problem is you and your inability to put the effort into providing the content and getting it out there in front of the world.

Having a blog that doesn’t suck, really isn’t rocket science. But in saying that, it isn’t something you can click your fingers and achieve instant success with either.

Here are the biggest three reasons your blog sucks:

1. You Don’t Blog Enough

Put simply, you’re probably just not posting enough content to be successful.

When it comes to being noticed not only by human eyes, but also the eyes of the Google crawl spider, content really is king.

Questions to ask:

How often do you publish on your blog? Do you blog daily or weekly?

Are you consistent with your publishing times? Do you publish at the same time each day/week or are you all over the place?

Tactics to solve the problem:

If you want to take blogging seriously, you should be publishing daily . This however isn’t always practical, especially if you have other aspects of your business that you need to focus on.

Whatever you do, just publish consistently. Any other time frame or inconsistency and you have no chance of building an engaged audience of readers.

If your content is too short then consider posting higher quality content less frequently. For example taking your inconsistent, short daily posts to a consistent, longer weekly post. Just have to find that balance between quality and quantity.

Consider stockpiling content. That is having a store of evergreen content that isn’t time dependent ready to go. Whenever you don’t have the time to write something new, just hit up your stockpile.

2. You Haven’t Put Your Blog in Front of Enough Eyes

Notice I worded it that YOU haven’t put your blog IN FRONT OF enough eyes, rather than simply not enough eyes have read your blog?

The internet is a big bad world and if you expect to just have your nobody blog found and read by thousands of people straight from the start, then you’re in for a rude awakening.

Questions to ask:

What is your content marketing budget? How are you splitting up this said budget between social and search platforms?

Do you have an organic strategy to go with your paid marketing efforts? If you don’t have to pay for it, then why would you want to!

Tactics to solve the problem:

As much as you might think that it’s cheating or not the right thing to do, having a paid marketing budget for your content is absolutely key in having a blog that fails to suck. Split it between search and find the social media platforms that you want to focus on. Keyword here being focus. Don’t cast your net too wide.

I’m a big fan of Facebook and Instagram for paid, while using Twitter for purely organic readership building but depending on your strategy and target audience, there are a ton of different social networks out there for you to split your time and money between. Just don’t be tight.

Alongside your paid marketing efforts, you should be building an organic following through social media campaigns designed to engage readers, as well as an SEO strategy to engage Google… oh um, I mean to give your readers a good user experience.

This always shits me, because no matter what Google says about user experience trumping algorithm driven SEO, it is still bullshit that is written with keywords and algo format in mind that comes out on top. Install the Yoast plugin on your blog and follow the checklist to a tee. This is not the place to cut corners.

Your organic strategy will overtake your paid strategy in time. You'll see.

3. Your Blogging Has no Strategy

Getting your blog in front of as many sets of eyes as you can doesn’t have to end at your website. Your content will always be published in its original form, in full, on your website’s blog.

But it doesn’t have to end there and you don’t have to put in a whole lot more time to see your work expanded on.

Questions to ask:

Where else can your content be placed to get in front of a new set of eyes?

How can you repurpose your original content in other ways so more people will see and engage with it?

Tactics to solve the problem:

Guest blogging is one tactic that can be used in a wider blogging strategy to get your content in front of new eyes. Identify other blogs in your niche and work on a deal to help leverage off each other’s following through guest blogging, link sharing and shout outs. Even if it’s just subtly speaking to them in the comments section, you’re still getting your name out there to a ready made, already engaged audience.

Just remember that it’s your content and quite frankly, you can do whatever the bloody hell you want with it. Twist it, prod it, shorten it, lengthen it, turn it into a picture. Repurposing your content is KEY in the world of blogging and social media.

Have you ever come across those social media accounts that post Facebook generated text to Twitter for example? Even if you don’t know what I’m referring to off the top of your head, you would have seen them but your mind just skimmed over them because they are a complete waste of your time and viewing effort. If you’re not going to look, then why would a customer?

Repurpose your content to fit the platform that you’re intending on having it read on and once again don’t cut corners!

Too many people I speak to with blogs give up because they don't do the basics.

Content is key to my opinion. Ok, you can pay to promote. But I am in the opinion that on Steemit it is really possible to get big exposure if your content is good. My humble opinion...

You're definitely right about content being key. But even on Steemit, there is a LOT of undervalued content that isn't getting the attention that it deserves. You have to promote your work and get it in front of eyes yourself.

There is a ton of undervalued content on Steemit that with a little extra work from the author, could get the rewards that they deserve. Put in the work and the rewards will come :)

Great post. I think the wording "your blog sucks" is what made me click.
One great point that I never thought about and never follow is to be consistant "when" you post your blog. If you want repeat audience this could be key. People have routine. Always check steemit after dinner, or first thing in the morning. If they know I am posting every day at that time they will start to look for my post and even expect it.
