SHIOK SHIOK #2: Avocado Juice - Best Drink to Make with the Fruit of the Mayan Gods

in #food7 years ago (edited)

Today I made my favourite Avocado Juice (as is it called in Singapore) for breakfast.

When you think about a fruit juice, you probably expect something vibrant and refreshing! Well this one’s not. It’s Creamy, Decadent, Easy-to-make, and Filling. Did you see what I did there with the c, d, e, f? :)

You always hear that avocados should be included in everyone’s diet . . . but why??

Well, they’re nutritional bombs in fruit form! Beyond being a good source of potassium, magnesium, iron, zinc, vitamins E and K, and fibre, avocados also contain the antioxidant glutathione, which fights against the ageing process and impedes incapacitating diseases like heart disease and cancer. They also support healthy nails and skin, brain development, and absorption of vitamins in our bodies.

Myth or Fact: Avocados are fattening!

A handful of people I know shy away from eating avocados simply because they are afraid to get fat. That’s really not true, and many of us Avocado Lovers can be used as living proof! Yes, avocados are the fattiest fruits in the world, but they contain a high level of monounsaturated fat, which is good fat that helps to keep our bad cholesterol levels low. Avocados also aid in insulin control, metabolism of carbohydrates, and helping our bellies feel full - all these factors work against weight gain!

I love Avocado Juice. I could drink it everyday!

My favourite Avocado Juice in Singapore is made by Mr. Avocado Exotic Fruit Juice Stall in Alexandra Village Food Centre. The last time I visited, it seemed like a mini competition war had broken out over Avocado Juice. There were as many as five stalls selling Avocado Juice there. In Singapore, you can find Avocado Juice in Fruit Stalls in most hawker centres and food courts, but five competing stalls in one location is really a large number. So, it really is avocado haven in Alexandra Village Food Centre. :))

I spent a whole year tweaking my recipe to come up with an Avocado Juice that is equally, if not more delicious than Mr Avocado’s. It is crucial that one uses a fully-ripened avocado. To check if it is ripened, gently press the avocado with your fingers. It should give lightly below your fingers. If not, put it in a brown paper bag with an apple and check regularly till it’s ripe. Once it’s ripe, you have to use it ASAP. There is really only a short window where the avocado is ideal for consumption. :)

An authentic Singaporean Avocado Juice includes gula malacca (palm sugar). This ingredient can normally be found in an Asian supermarket, and I found it in Düsseldorf as well. It comes in brown blocky cylinders. The smaller the cylinder is, the easier to cut down, so opt for that if faced with a choice.

Everything you need to make a delicious Singaporean Avocado Juice:

1 large (220g) or 1.5 small (140 gm) avocados, fully ripened
500ml full cream milk
100ml water
60 gm sweetened condensed milk
25 gm ground gula malacca dissolved in 50 ml boiling hot water
2 dashes Ceylon cinnamon powder
1 dash vanilla flakes or 1/4 tsp vanilla essence

How to make it:

Halve your avocados. Push the middle of your knife into the seed and twist to de-seed. The seed should come out smoothly (whether you use 1 large avocado or 1.5 small ones, the total weight of the de-seeded avocado should be approx 170 gm). Scrape the avocado flesh into the blender.

Add in all remaining ingredients, and blend well. The ideal thickness of the drink can be observed by a vortex forming in the centre of your blender as it works.

Pour into glasses and enjoy!! :)

The Important Question:

Did my Avocado Juice taste authentic? Absolutely yes!! It was rich and creamy, and the pleasant palm sugar taste did not overpower the demure avocado.

Try to taste this new Singaporean juice. I can't help waiting now. Thanks for motivating me to experience a new kind of fruit juice.

I like the Jam-Jar cup never seen them before, are they common?

I loved these cups the instant saw them in a trendy cafe in Singapore..Came to Düsseldorf and saw it in one of the Wholesalers here..simply had to buy it :) I'm not sure how common they are..but definitely not rare, I think :))

Maybe im just old:)

Where have you been all my life? I love avocados, but to drink one?...Who'd A Thunk It! @curly-q loves them too and will be thrilled to try this one.

You have to try this one then :)) Btw, if you can't find palm sugar in the supermarkets around you, simply substitute 30 gm additional sweetened condensed milk into the recipe, and bring the water quantity up to 150 ml. :) Happy drinking!
