First planting of the season
The “cool” garden is going
Spent this afternoon getting the cool garden cleaned up and planted. I have 3 rows of asparagus that I planted last year that I am curious to see how they do. I weeded the rows around the crown spots, so now it is just waiting to see if they pop this year.
To my surprise I have 2 rows of onions that have over wintered and are growing now. I’m not sure how well they will do but with a solid root system established I hope they can give me a solid output this year. Hopefully this time I won’t neglect to harvest them at the end of the year...
I also found that I forgot I planted a row of shallots next to the onions last year. it appears I neglected to notate that in my planting records. It is a good thing I was aware as I started to clean that row since I had the rake and was just plowing away at the weeds. The shallot tops are all looking like green squid arms sticking up from the ground. Kinda cool looking and also a really good portent for me to have a good harvest from them this year if they are already looking this good.
Below is my plan for the cool garden.
Another good thing is the strawberry rows are showing signs of growth and returning to life. I raked out a bunch of the detritus and debris to help open up the crowns a bit for better sun. They are a bit voracious in their space and do take a healthy amount of care to maintain a functioning row. If last year was any tell than this year should see about 20 to 25 pounds of strawberries harvested.
I’m still waiting on the main garden to finish thawing and also to drain so I can till. But as fate would have it we are expecting rain through the weekend. At least it will get rid of the last bits of snow so hopefully next week I will be able to get the tilling done. Until then I will be working on the Pole Bean garden in hopes of getting the poles all set and prepped for planting. That is going to be a pretty big project to finish up but it will expand my growing area by a significant amount.

That looks like a good start to this year's garden.
When I had green onions in a spot in the garden, they were about the first thing that came up in the spring. They were trying to spread all over the garden for a couple of years before I dug them all out. It was the only way to get rid of them...
Hah, invasion of the onion! Sounds like Jerusalem Artichokes.
I have plastic down all around my rows so I don't end up with seeds hitting the soil that much. Granted I always have volunteer tomatoes coming up in random places in my main garden.
Yeah, you think you picked up all the tomatoes at the end of the season, and they still come in random places in the garden.
