Busy days on Fleming Family farm
Yesterday there was quite a number of goings on around the farm.
Spring means TONS of projects and work to be done, mixed with trying to find content for posts, kid wrangling, and random appointments. This makes the days go by fast, faster seeming than normal sometimes, and means I generally don't get nearly the things accomplished I had hoped to. That being said yesterday was a fruitful day of work on the farm.
We started off by making our monthly trip to Costco to do battle with the crowds of elderly as they block the aisles in attempts to get free samples. The key is to go first thing in the morning when they open, get in and get out. I live in the country for a reason so trips to town are always a bit rare on purpose.
After we returned home the kids needed attention,food,etc then I could finally get to some work. The first thing to do was get my freshly purchased Asparagus planted. A week ago I Planted my first row of Asparagus and was intent on planting more. I recently picked up 4 more bags (24 roots) to add to the 12 already planted in the first row.
The middle of the 3 rows was the first planting a week ago and the 2 new rows were planted on either side. I now have 36 Asparagus plants in the ground. I am really curious to see just how well they fill in the area over the next couple of years.
The next project was to plant a few short rows of peas. Both of the boys LOVE fresh snap peas and shelling peas so I make sure to plant rows for them primarily. The 3 types of peas I have planted are all short enough that both boys will be able to pick them.
The 3 rows are all planted but the net trellises need to be put up for each row. The idea is to use the shed to anchor one end of the trellis so I only have to use a few fence posts (which are in thin availability around the farm). The cool garden has done well for the peas each year and has allowed them to continue to put off fresh peas until the heat of summer hits.
The warm weather has brought out the insects all around the farm. In between rain showers the sun bore down and the butterflies flitted about quickly and silently. If I were to try and count there would be hundreds of these Western Pine Elfin (Incisalia eryphon) butterflies. They danced about in the air, swirling around each other in a manic looking flight, then flying off individually to find a new place to land and sun themselves.
Attached to the railroad tie that spans our creek was this Long-Jawed Orb Weaver spider waiting on some of the many insects flying around to get caught in its web. This is one of 6 spiders that have setup shop on the span, all in the direct sun light.
The soil holds some surprises that occasionally come to the surface. These 2 grubs were found in the same row that was being cleared for the peas. The first was on one end and the other was 15 feet away on the exact other end of the row. I have looked and searched the entomology sites but could not find a positive id of these 2.
A couple of other insects I found enjoying the sunlight.
All in all a pretty standard day on the farm. The weather is improving with the sun now shining, the boys are waking up for the day, and I have much work to get done.

I can only imagine how busy this time of year is for you. Hope it's still fun as well!
Fortunately it's fun and especially since I get to show the boys so many things. The balance is the hardest part, fun, work, or be lazy.... choices choices.
