Fresh Air or Security?

I am someone who needs fresh air. Regardless of temperature, I will have a window cracked or some method of bringing the outside air in.

Now in SE Asia, I live without air conditioning and have had fans and ceiling fans in most places I live. Balconies and windows add to the mix.

As soon as I get anywhere and put my stuff down, I look for the best way to "get some air going." I feel like I can really tell the difference if I don't do this as I sit re-breathing the same air.

I go for airflow over security. I will prop open the front or back door if I need to. In all the years I have been doing this, I only had one intruder. This was a drunk Navy guy who walked in and asked me if I had a light for his cigarette. I happened to have a box of matchbooks used for my gas stove, and gave him a couple of those. He was very happy to take them and leave. I do not even know if he would remember this encounter, and I only found it funny myself.

One of my most miserable times was a 16 day stay in Pentagon City near Washington DC. I was there 2 weeks for back to back Navy conferences in a hermetically sealed hotel room. None of the windows opened, and the door went to an airless hallway.

This was a top of the line and lovely looking suite in Arlington VA, but I felt like I could not breathe the whole time. I had to go down an elevator and through a gigantic underground mall to get to the outside. I made that trip many times throughout this long stay. No matter how pretty, $250 a night was not providing comfort at that hotel.
