Science stops ferret extinction

In February 2021, the Animal Protection Association (APA) made a global alert indicating that a species of the American ferret was in danger of extension due to the illegal hunting and commercialization that was being carried out with this peculiar animal. This alert was immediately taken into account and moved humanity so much that even the scientific community turned its gaze to this event.

Although initially the APA thought that the only solution to the problem was to create protective laws for this species, over the months they received the visit of scientists working at the University of California (United States), with the intention of proposing the cloning of the black-footed ferret using a replica of genes from another animal of this same species that had died more than 30 years ago and its remains were frozen.

Now, the procedure of this replicated cloning will begin on December 10, 2023 since, at the beginning of this year, the ferret that has more than 30 years of death must be subjected to scientific procedures where they can evaluate all the genetic information that is in the fossil remains of the animal. However, scientists are certain that this cloning will be successful because, during 2022, they did a scientific trial with the genes they obtained from a wild ferret that was a few months away from dying and, the results were positive since they managed to have 16,000 ferrets of wild heart replicated.

According to preliminary data that scientists have, with the cloning of the American ferret, not only will the extinction of this species be stopped, they will also achieve that people who usually have this type of animals at home, no longer run the risk that at some point the species shows aggressive signals since the genes of the wild ferret are passive. A curious fact about the name given to this species is that it is identified that way because, in the past, several ferrets reacted aggressively when they rescued a Canadian family from a herd of apes and although they were fewer, they managed to scare away aggressive animals.

With this genetic cloning it is projected that in 2024 it will be possible to obtain the reappearance of 5,000,000 ferrets, a perfect amount to guarantee that the extinction of this species is a danger and when the goal is reached, it will not be necessary to continue cloning them because, they will begin to have their natural reproduction process however, This cloning process will not be the only one since, scientists plan to do the same operation with the passenger pigeon noting that, of this animal there are only 100 specimens left and to ensure that they do not become extinct prematurely, they have them protected following all the necessary protocols for their conservation.

According to the statements issued by scientists, this technique was already applied in the early 2000s when the wild horse was almost declared extinct and from this cloning, they made use of the genes of a species that was located in the state of Texas. As a curious fact I share that, this type of procedure is known in the world of science as Biotechnology and consists of genetically replicating genomic data, these being responsible for coordinating and conserving all the genes of an animal species.

It is important to highlight that the scientific community is interested in maintaining the American ferret species in force because it is an animal that naturally promotes the safety of the areas where they are located, guaranteed so that other defenseless animals are not attacked by their predators and, in their opinion, continuing to have these ferrets would also guarantee the conservation of weasel and rodent colonies; animals that appear dead daily in the city of Wyoming, United States.

Finally, the last mass breeding of ferrets was recorded in 1990 however, this high amount was only maintained for 10 years since, since 2000 the figure has been on the rise considered and although to date it had not been seen as an option to preserve animal species through genetics, scientists say that the time has come to innovate and prevent animal extinction from remaining a problem.
