Next Colony: The Rise of Jack Steel Chapter 5, Page 4
Lieutenant's Log Stardate 97238.14 - Starbase Genesis1
The Shield Generator is at full capacity and has been holding strong for nearly 2 days now. This has given us plenty of room to concentrate on advancing our Depots. The attacks continue to come in, but seem have reduced in these days; perhaps because of the constant shielding. What's really on my mind, though, is Jack Steel. He didn't give me a straight answer the other day. Perhaps I put too much pressure on him?! Hopefully he will accept the assignment I offered him; we need as many ideas and insights as possible.
End Lieutenant's Log
As Jack calmly walked away from the Depot region of the colony, he felt a sense of satisfaction knowing that the work being done there is moving along smoothly. With two days of protection from the Shield Generator, many of the Skills needed for Phasing Up the Depots were acquired. This makes things easier for allowing the next round of shielding to focus on the actual Phasing Up of the Depot capacity of hopefully all four.
Now that work was done, Jack's thoughts gravitated towards the Shipyard. He wasn't losing any sleep over the Lieutenant's offer, like before, as he had already decided to take on the assignment just after leaving the Lieutenant's quarters. Now, as he moved ever closer to the Shipyard, he wondered what surprises and novelties awaited him on the other side of this new threshold along his journey. In the distance, he could see the building. From the primary entrance a sea of Cadets swarmed towards him. The work day was over, and everyone was heading back to their quarters. From the crowd Jack heard the men yelling, "The Base is the other way Cadet!" To which Jack replied, "No, I'm heading for the Shipyard! And I'm not a Cadet!" The group laughed uniformly, as if listening to a comedy stand-up performance. The crewman closest to Jack answered back, "You mean the Ghostyard!" They all laughed again. Jack smiled and continued along his path.
At the entrance stood a tall Officer, perhaps an Ensign, or something. Jack hadn't really ever paid much attention to the ranking system on the Starbase. "Hold it right there, Soldier! How can I help you?", the guard asked. "My name is Jack Steel, I'm here to have a look around the Shipyard." he replied. "Sorry Sir, but only authorized personnel can enter." Just as Jack was about to speak again, a voice yelled from behind, "First Class already gave the go ahead, Ensign!" The guard smiled at Jack and moved out of the way, tapping on the console which opened the massive gate.
Jack slowly walked in, eyes wide open, marveling at the enormity of the Shipyard. He now understood the "Ghostyard" joke, as the building was devoid of any ships. As he looked around, he heard steps approach him from behind.
- Hey Stranger, what brings you to this desolate ghost town?
Hey, my name is Jack Steel, nice to meet you.
- Cadet 3rd Class David Goode, but please call me Dave.
So Dave, this is the Shipyard.
- That's right. The only Shipyard in the galaxy with no ships!
Let me guess, the constant attacks prevent us from building up a fleet?!
- Bingo!
So what do you guys do all day?
- Play sports! Soccer, basketball, football... You name it, we play it! We're going to set up some tennis courts on the runway in the coming days. Should be fun!
I can't believe what the hell I'm hearing! You're joking, right?!
- No Sir! Wish I were, but I can barely remember when we build our last ship.
Sorry Dave, I'm feeling a bit disoriented, do you mind if I have a look around on my own; I need to reflect on what I'm taking in.
- No problem Jack. Take as much time as you need. I'm here if you have any questions.
Jack was overwhelmed by what he was hearing and seeing. Across the gargantuan monitors he saw blueprints for all kinds of ships - Corvettes, Transporters, Frigates and others. Yet the facility was empty. Jack's mind tried to comprehend the totality of the situation, but for the moment, it was beyond his grasp of understanding. Not wanting to become overly discouraged, he sat down on the edge of the top level of the building, and enjoyed the sun setting over the horizon. "This isn't right! I need some answers from the Lieutenant!"
