For Jack Steel, life on Starbase Genesis3 was far removed from what he had been used to on Genesis1 or Genesis2. This Rare Ore Planet was indeed alien. Instead of waking to golden sunlight filling his room, the newly appointed Captain rises each morning to the sound of explosive thunderbolts, and the sight of dark gray skies. The mineral rich planet provides an abundance of ore, but at the cost of little vegetation. Despite this somber awakening, Captain Steel faces his day with determination and optimism.

Exiting his quarters, it still felt strange for Jack to find himself on the opposite side of the Base with the rest of the top rank. Still as studious as ever, the Captain had plans to make some changes today. Commander Maxwell had continued to encourage Jack to accept his role as leader, and to not be afraid to make decisions. Experience is often the greatest teacher; as are the mistakes we make during those experiences. Reaching the Control Room, Jack took a deep breath, adjusted his uniform and stared momentarily at his silver pips. The door opened silently, with lightening speed, and in walked the new Jack Steel!

• "Captain in the Control Room," announced Commander Maxwell.

At ease, gentlemen! Good morning, Commander.

• Good morning, Captain. Everything is running smoothly here. We have no problems to report.

Excellent, Commander. We need to make some adjustments today.

• "Right away, Sir!" the Commander responded with great enthusiasm, joy and surprise in his voice, "What did you have in mind, Captain?"

Gentlemen, this is our local space that we are exploring at the moment. As you can see, unlike our former colonies, there are no other planets. This is obviously a great opportunity for us.

• I agree, Captain. What would you like to change?

At the moment, Commander, we are sending our standard Explorers to the closest sectors of unexplored space, as this allows us to send missions more frequently.

• That's correct, Sir. This is the most efficient way to compensate for the slow speed of our ships.

Yes, but we need to widen the picture, no pun intended, to get a better look at the future.

• What do you mean, Sir?

Gentlemen, you will notice in the galactic northeast what looks like a massive hurricane coming directly at us. This is the result of Beta Quadrant -2/-1 being completely explored.

There was an air of tension in the room, as the crew stared silently at the monitor. The Captain continued...

Commander, those are Admirals or Quadrant Admirals coming at us, and once they have explored the north and east of this quadrant, we will find them on our doorstep!

Seeing where the Captain was going with his observations, Commander Maxwell exclaimed...

• Captain, what would like us to do?!

Reroute all standard Explorer ships to focus explorations from galactic north to galactic southeast. It doesn't matter that the flights will take longer, we need to safeguard our advantage that we have to the west and southwest.

• Understood, Captain! Very wise decision!

That's all for today, gentlemen. Commander, the Control Room is yours!

As Jack turned to walk out of the room, he quickly glanced at Commander Maxwell and gave him a wink. The Commander smiled with great pride and admiration. The crew stood as the Commander gestured to Jack to turn around. Captain Steel turned and the entire room gave him a silent salute. Jack returned the salute, and exited with head held high!
