December 26, 2004 at 7.59 WIB, an earthquake of magnitude 9.1 to 9.3 on the Richter scale has rocked the seabed in southwest Sumatra, about 20 to 25 kilometers offshore. After several hours the tsunami waves from the earthquake reached mainland Africa. The United Nations (UN) dated December 27, 2004 declared the tsunami in Aceh the biggest humanitarian disaster that had ever occurred. International assistance began to be moved towards the disaster area. The worst areas hit by the tsunami were Aceh, Khao Lak in Thailand and parts of Sri Lanka and India.

A few years later the Aceh Tsunami Museum was built to commemorate the devastating tsunami that struck the Province of Aceh on December 26, 2004, which claimed more than 240,000 people. The museum is located in the city of Banda Aceh next to the Blang Padang field which is not too far from the Baiturrahman Grand Mosque.
