As I get older I notice that I am no longer interested in tweaking the IT stuff that I own. I just want it to work out of the box.

When I was younger I loved to format my computer and install a fresh copy of Windows 95/98/2000/XP. Install all the drivers in the right order. Run benchmarks to find out I won an extra 3 frames in my favorite game. I used to do this every 4 months at least.

I also spend hours downloading games (and movies) from the internet and cracking them. Sometimes the cracks didn’t work and you had to go to gamecopyworld trying to find the right one. I did not have a lot of money back then but I did have a ton of time so I didn’t mind. I was a kid.

Nowadays I have no more time for this bullshit and nor do I want to. I earn an income now and luckily I can afford things. So, I buy games and software I need legally and with Netflix I can watch what I want. It saves so much time and effort. No more hassle.

But even when you buy everything legally you can still get annoyed. Yes, Windows 10, Yes, Android, I’m looking at you.

Ever since Windows 10 decided I needed an update while I was 3 hours into data recovering a client’s hard drive, I can’t stand it. It literally said, ‘do you want to update now or in 15 minutes.’ I was looking for the update later button and it wasn’t there! And indeed 15 minutes later my laptop rebooted with no regards for any file that might have been open and not saved. It was the most amazing thing.

The recent anniversary update was the final drop. Waiting for hours for this thing to install is not done! Not if you run a business.

“All your files are exactly where you left them”, Why wouldn’t they be?

With mobile phones, it’s no difference for me. The other day I just wanted to make a full backup off my phone. It’s android. Just a full copy to park somewhere with everything in it. I have no time to think about what I might need. I was willing to pay money for an app but I couldn’t find a good one. At least not within a reasonable amount of time.

I’m tired of trying to figure this stuff out, I don’t want to do it anymore, and that’s why I decided to go where I thought I would never go. EVER! I ordered an iPhone. Not because I am a fan or I like the brand. I just want something that works from the get-go.

I have been working allot lately with Apple products because a colleague and apple consultant I know needed my help with some big job. He showed me this new way. I’m joining the dark side.

After years of owning Nokia, Blackberry and Samsung phones I ordered my first iPhone.

Ordering was already a blessing. No longer did I have to go through 73 billion different android models. It really is the paradox of choice.

I ordered the phone in 3 easy steps:

  1. Do you want a big or small phone?
  2. Do you want 32gb/128gb/256gb memory?
  3. What color do you want?

That’s it! Now, of course, I don’t know if I will like it in the end. But this simplicity is a good start.

This is how simple I want things to be from now on.

I’m getting too old for this stuff.

I agree, when we are younger we like the tweaking part and we have spare time, but as the years go by, we have less and less of that. We just don't have as much time as we used to spare, idk if apple is the solution, but it can simplify some aspects of life.

I don't know either. I guess I will find out soon enough! Simple and easygoing is what I'm aiming for.

I did the same thing at the end of last year. I wasn't the deepest into controlling and tweaking things to my liking as I had ever been and even though it was doing exactly what I wanted I was tired of doing it. My dad upgraded out of his MacBook Air and offered it to me. I hadn't expected to wipe it and install some LInux distro but he encouraged me to give OSX a try and I nevertheless looked back. I really do enjoy playing around but with my sons growing up and me wanting to spend as much time with them ASB possible, I was more than ready to make the switch. I boot up a live distro once in a while or play with rasp Ian on my Pi, but my regular use device s area now Apple products.

You are where I want to be. If I like the iPhone I'll switch pretty fast to the rest of the devices Apple has to offer. If I need it for work I can always run Windows in VM.

We cease to delve into all the details, but our place is young and unusual and should be.
