A New Year Bug - Rhagonycha fulva

A great topic to start a New Year.
I wish you all most amazing bugs to shoot. The uglier the better. And May they be as patient as this one here.

Funny how you see some ugly bugger in bright colour and first think that comes to mind that it is probably harmful, evil and will eat all your precious plants.
Well.. this is what Wikipedia says:

Adults feed on aphids, and also eat pollen and nectar. Larvae prey on ground-dwelling invertebrates, such as slugs and snails, and live at the base of long grasses.

Not that bad eh? Besides that it does looks pretty creepy, it would have been nice to have a little helper like that in a garden. One that would take care of the aphids, mealy bugs and trips on my plants too.

So you see... not all bugs are bad and needs to be exterminated. Some are good and just look mean.

This fella can be found in the grasslands and woodland especially if there are any Cow Parsley present. I found mine near some overgrown fields full of wildflowers, Thistle and wild Mallow. Oh yes.. they love the Mallow! Tons of them on the flowers and leaves.
