Private War - Episode # 2:
Who Were They?
“That’s right...we need a dust-off...we have one seriously wounded, one KIA and several minor casualties...over.” The Captain put down the radio and turned to one of the platoon leaders.
“Well...what happened?”
“Dunno Sir. Suddenly, out of nowhere it seemed, those two guys appeared. They were being chased by Charlie. It was their bad luck...they took fire from both of us. One guy got blown to pieces and cooked by the napalm...the other guy …..well he’s still alive. Not sure why or for how long.”
“Who were they?”
“ Americans Sir. Other than that we have no idea. They..like I say...they were pretty badly messed up and their dog tags, and other stuff, had been blown free...we found dogtags, hats, a boot, and some body parts scattered about..we put the dog tags back with the right bodies, we think. One set of the dog tags was pretty much melted by the Willie Peter. Can’t make out anything about it.”
“Is this the operative?“
murmured a voice to the orderly.
“I’m sorry sir?”
said the orderly.
“ The person in the bed...who is he”
... the big man asked showing the orderly identification which made it clear that he was authorized to be asking the questions… and that the orderly had best answer them...then forget the whole incident ever happened.
“Private Hank August, sir...he was flown in yesterday. It’s a miracle that he’s still alive with that much damage”
“Was there anyone else...from his unit”
“No sir”
The surly civilian just looked at the orderly for a long minute then grunted...and walked away.
Some time later on a radio link to an unnamed agency in washington.
“Subject is confirmed terminated. Close Case file”
Hank....he WAS Hank now, slept on. He wouldn’t fully regain consciousness for weeks. Good thing too....that way he wouldn’t be able to advise the plastic surgeon when they gave him a new face. His old one was was pretty much burnt off. The surgeon gave him the WRONG face.
