Ulog #6 - Quick garden update

in #homesteading8 years ago

Hi everyone,

Here's a quick update to how my garden beds are doing, including a little surprise on my balcony!

Has anyone harvested kidney beans before? I'm all ears if you have advice for me!

Maybe your ground cucumbers haven't had their roots hit anything hard (like the outside of a pot) and they are just rooting for more long-term growth? Maybe the potted ones hit plastic and went "Oh shit! I better sprout some vines to extend seeds to someplace with a little more root room?

My wife tells me that my descriptions of plant growth make it sound like it is a committee deciding on the direction of growth.

Survival! Awesome update.

hahahah I like your theory =)I don't know what it is, but I think it's too much water and probably also more bugs than up on the balcony. I don't think the roots have touched plastic yet. Usually cucumbers have shallow roots and my pot is pretty huge...I think it's just more sheltered...

Ohhh all the BJJ people have their own garden...I'm jealousss!!! Also, Im jealous cuz you managed to upload to DTube. I'm fighting with it already for an hour haha :D Getting stupid error on submit button :/

ah don't be jealous, you have no idea how looooong it took me to upload this video lol. Make sure it's in mp4 format. =)

Haha true jealousy is not good for anyone :D Hah if I upload from home it's always at least 30 minutes for me :D So I usually take it to work and there it's really maybe a minute or two :D

Nice gardens!. Here are a few reasons my cucumbers have underperformed. 1) Planted too early and temps get too cool at night. Which stunts the plant from the start and generally wont fully recover. Solution=cover with clear plastic dome until it takes off
2)planted where i planted potatos the year before. Solution=after potatoes wait a year or 2 before planting cucumbers they dont seem to like eachother.

  1. too much water like you said = add some peatmoss and perlie to the hole or whole garden.
  2. soil qualiy not rich or airy enough = amend with peatmoss, sand good compost perlite, and a little agricultural lime if the soil is on the acidic side.

Thanks @billmega! Temps are not an issue since it's a tropical climate (maybe too hot?), and I haven't planted potatoes before, but I will definitely look into your other solutions =) Thanks for watching and for the advice!

Ya your right! Lol i guess Panama is holy hot. Its been a crazy hot summer where im at...I have never grown in the tropics however.
Continuous hot temps above 95 deg will have similar effects. waming your soil preventing the roots from proper nutrient uptake. Solution = shade the soil. Put a damp newspaper not soaking wet, around the base not touching the stalk. Should reduce the soil temp around the plant by almost 10 degree. It looks like you have mulched but in extreme heat it may just not be enough.
Happy Gardening👍😃

thank you so much @billmega =) I'll let you know how it goes!

No worries!. @evecab. hope I helped a bit. If so you should notice a difference in a few days to a week....

thank you =)

Nice accent 😁

Check your ph of the soil in the pot vs the ones in the ground. I’d bet that is the easiest difference to spot & correct.

Volunteer seeds always do better, they are wild & natural 👨‍🌾

ah yes I need to get those strips to measure ph =) I'm still new at this whole gardening thing and pretty much improvise ahaha but I will check ! =)

Hahaha I love how you let the cucumbers take over your laundry rope :D It just so you :D Well, the harvest season is coming to an end here in Central Europe but it never ends in the tropics so your garden can make you happy all year round ;)

LOL yes, I can't possibly evict my cucumber =)

oh but you can still grow stuff in September, can't you? At least if global warming lets you have a longer summer =)
