Gardening Report for SteemIt Community Garden Journal Challenge

in #gardening5 years ago

Hello again gardeners and non gardeners, it's time for another report and an entry to #gardenjournal2019 hosted by @simplymike. Come with me to show you what we have in the garden.

Let's start with raspberries. Last year was a record year, this year is far from being a good one.

IMG_20190720_094026a.jpg

There are many new branches that will give fruit next year. Let's hope next year will be a great one.

IMG_20190720_094634a.jpg

I'm still able to collect a handful of fruits that can be eaten but that's all.

IMG_20190720_093939a.jpg

Grapes are looking good and growing. It could have been a good year for grapes but the vine went through a cleaning process. We cut the old branches to let it renew itself with new branches. This should be done from time to time to bet a better harvest.

IMG_20190720_093951a.jpg

It's ok though as we don't need wine and the grapes are going to be for consumption (a part of it) and for jam. I want to make grape jam with lavender.

Honeydew!!! My favorites! This year we have plenty.

IMG_20190720_093350a.jpg

Next week this is going to be my breakfast. I know it's full of sugar but it's also full of vitamins and we need to eat fruits. I'll make sure to have 10k steps and my training done :)

Tomatoes are finally starting to ripen.

IMG_20190720_091506a.jpg

The yellow ones are tricky. You see them still being green and you're waiting for them to turn yellow and when they are yellow it's already too late as they are too soft. We had to learn that the first year.

IMG_20190720_091546a.jpg

These little cuties are the black cherry tomatoes, can't wait to taste them. Next time I'll be able to show you some ready for consumption.

IMG_20190720_091650a.jpg

Onions!!! Last year was a total disaster, all the onions got rotten in the ground due to too much rain.

IMG_20190720_091637a.jpg

This year we have plenty and big ones. My dad have used an organic fertilizer that gave results.

IMG_20190720_115202a.jpg

This is part of the harvest as about half was still green and not ready to harvest.

IMG_20190720_095537a.jpg

The neighbor wasn't so lucky or most likely he made a mistake. He planted the onions to the same place as last year and that's not advised. You have to use rotation and avoid spreading disease by using the same place two years in a row. Plus he stopped cleaning weed halfway, he said weed will use part of the moisture and that way onions don't rot but in fact weed kept onions in shade and prevented sunlight that could have made extra moisture evaporate.

IMG_20190720_091629a.jpg

It's not easy to balance things as you don't know what's the best and you're smart only after. Good thing you can learn from your mistakes. let's see if he listens. He was told not to use the same place two years in a row but he didn't listen.

IMG_20190720_093126a.jpg

Eggplants! I'm really curious how these are going to turn out. Maybe the soil is not suitable for growing eggplants, I don't know but we never got good ones that you can buy from the farmers market.

IMG_20190720_093151a.jpg

Peppers also look nice.

IMG_20190720_093220a.jpg

I believe in one week will be ready. These are excellent for vegetable salads.

IMG_20190720_093430a.jpg

Green beans, there's plenty already canned with tomato juice from last year.

IMG_20190720_091431a.jpg

The problem is green beans are early and tomatoes come one month later so we make sure to have tomato juice to use for canning green beans. During winter you have your soup almost ready.

The garden is doing so wonderfully, good for you! I love that you get to grow melon. I have never been able to get it large enough in my season's time. Enjoy all your wonderful hard work.

Thank you @sunscape! I'm sorry to hear about your melons, maybe the climate is too cold for them, who knows.

I think so too, it does not stay warm enough here in my part of NY for long enough.

Maybe spring is late and autumn is early. Our weather is perfect for it.

That's a massive harvest!

It is indeed.

Wow! What a harvest!!!
Those raspberries caught my eye... And grapes, and honeydew (all my favs!), tomatoes, onions, etc etc... what a lot!

It is indeed and this is just a small part of it ;)
