Writing competition #127 / The mysterious place / Welcome to your new and last home

I arrived as a prisoner at the Whales Island Correctional, located a thousand kilometers from the coast, in the middle of the ocean. I guess the island is called that because it has some hills that look like the heads of humpback whales. First they introduced me to the boss of the prison, who told me:

-Welcome to your new and last home.

Then he explained to me some of the rules that I would have to follow in that prison compound. Later, two guards took me to what would be my cell, which I had to share with another prisoner. He was a short man with a stern face.

-Why did they sentence you? –he asked me.

-Because I was stupid -I replied.

-We all have something of a fool, and the worst fools are the ones who end up here.

-Well, I accidentally killed my mother-in-law.

-Many guys here allege similar things to insist that they are innocent.

-Mine is true. I was cleaning my shotgun and the gun went off and the bullet ripped a hole through my mother-in-law's forehead. The authorities did not believe me because the witnesses told the jury that my mother-in-law and I hated each other. And the other thing is that the judge was that woman's secret lover.

-It must be that the guy loved her, because he went so far as to sentence you to life imprisonment.
In that I looked out the window and the only thing that was seen was the ocean

-And what did you do to end up in this place? –I asked him.

-Well, I'm a kleptomaniac. I was the author of fifty assaults on banks and commercial stores. But the most ironic thing was that all the assaults were done with a toy gun.

In that moment I noticed that several huge fish were seen near the shore.

-What animals are those? -I asked the other.

-White sharks. They are like the other guards in this prison.

-Apparently there is no escape here.

-It's true. Wherever you see the safest escape will be death.
