You are what you eat is a phrase most people use, but it is very true.it is indeed true that the quality of food that you take in will do a great deal to determine the quality of life that goes on in each cell of your body. Food has a huge effect on your health, and a diet rich in any one aspect would be an unhealthy diet, in the same way that a diet lacking in a certain nutrient would also affect your health.
A balanced diet consists of carbohydrates, fats, proteins, vitamins, minerals, water, fibre and roughages in a right or proper proportion.
All these nutrients provide materials necessary for growth and the body tissue provide and maintain the basic human structure. The body supplied with energy required to perform it internal and external factors. These various classes of foods have their own functions for example, carbohydrate is energy giving nutrient, proteins are the nutrient that repair all the worn out tissues of the body thereby enhancing good looking and prevent infections, water helps in the osmotic pressure of the blood and normal distribution of electrolyte in the body,to dilutes and moistens food, necessary for the formation of urine and stools and transports of hormones and antibodies from one part of the body to another. Mineral salts are essential in the body for health, maintain tissue cells example of this mineral salts are: calcium, phosphorus, iron, potassium, magnesium, sodium and iodine. Roughage is given in the diet to produce bulk faeces, stimulate peristalsis and bowel movement.
Adequate nutrition is essential in early childhood, old age and all stages of life to ensure healthy growth, proper organ formation, a strong immune system and neurological and cognitive development.
