Stingless Bee Keeping
Hey Steemians, thanks for checking out my post. I know I have posted a lot about music and the Blackbox. I think its time I want to share about me and my unlikely hobbies.
Stingless Bees
Last year, I was very interested to start my own stingless bee farm as I heard that the honey has a lot of medical benefits and the downstream products are almost endless! The locals here call it "Kelulut". I set out on my journey to go get my hives. I could not believe that all this time, I've always seen it in my life but had never crossed my mind that it produces high grade honey. I've squashed them and make them fight to the death with each other! I know, I was cruel but that was a long time ago.
I went to a stingless bee farm which my dad happened to know the bee keeper. I decided to buy 4 hives as a start as I have some knowledge on how to do this thanks to YouTube. Sure they tell you it is maintenance free but there's still work to make sure the hives and not exposed to threats such as frogs, lizards, ants and other smaller species of stingless bees (the smaller species tend to invade the bigger bees hives and take over the hive). Like an excited little boy, I had a new toy to play with. Gosh, I felt old cause before to me it was a hobby only retirees would get into. But I saw this as a long term hobby with awesome rewards.
If you have never tried stingless bees honey, I would recommend that you do. Our common expectations of honey is that it is a thick dark golden syrup that is sweet. Stingless bees honey is found to be more watery and depends where you drink the honey from it tastes different. If you are sipping directly from the honey pods in the hive, it would taste sweet but if its drawn out of the honey pods into a catchment tank, it will taste sweet and slightly sour. That doesn't mean that the honey is bad it just means that when the honey came in contact with materials like plastic, it has a reaction that causes it to taste sweet and sourish. One of the ways that can be taken to eliminate this by double boiling the honey.
I hope to expand steadily in the coming months and meet other bee keepers as well. I will be posting the progress and how this hobby has led me into another hobby eventually. Do follow, resteem and share my post if you liked it. Don't forget to comment on the section below. Thanks for reading!

It is a rewarding hobby, i wish to learn how to keep and harvest them too. How about the other species they called as 'tualang' what is the different? Or maybe thay will be your next post?
@judejulius Yes. There is a species called Tualang. The ones I have is called Itama. Sizes, production rates and sometimes, some species only tend to only choose to go to certain plants. But rest assured, all the honey is good.
I see. I heard about 'tualang' is usually found in jungle and bigger size. And kelulut is usually nested in the house or near house area, is it?
It depends. Sometimes, they fly out and decide they want to make a new hive where they feel is suitable for them. But yes, tualang is not that common in urban areas
kelulut ! =) https://steemit.com/teammalaysia/@bitrocker2020/kelulut-natural-jungle-honey-from-sabah-malaysia
the price of a bottle is crazy expensive now .
Dude, it is! Maybe one day we can make a trip to your uncle's place. He's got pretty cool hive designs!
I'm really interested in bee keeping! Do you open your farm for visit? Where are you based? 😊
Hey Natalie, I'm glad to know you are keen on bee keeping too. Well, at the moment I only have 4 hives. Its in Penampang. Can bring you for a tour if you like.
I will definitely drop by your bee farm when I am back in KK in April =)
Nuk, we should go mamak. I want to know more about kelulut.
Sure thing. Always good to know anyone interested to do bee keeping.
Sounds like a plan. Glad you are keen.
