Eutychus: A Lucky Young
Hello brothers! Today I am going to talk quickly about a young man mentioned in the Bible, I must confess that this character has always been mentioned in a negative way in the Bible studies I have heard on several occasions.
He is called Eutych...
Acts 20: 7-12
On the first day of the week, when the disciples met to break bread, Paul taught them, and left the next day; and extended the speech until midnight. And there were many lamps in the upper room where they were gathered; and a young man named Eutychus, who was sitting by the window, exhausted from a deep sleep, because Paul gave long lectures, overcome by the dream that fell from the third floor, and was raised dead. Then Paul came down and fell on him, and, embracing him, said: Do not be alarmed, because he is alive. After having gone up, divided the bread and eaten, he spoke for a long time until dawn; and so it came out. And they took the young man alive, and they consoled themselves greatly.
It's amazing, right?
Eutychus, whose Greek root means: "Well nourished, fortunate, with the good to come, happy." But Eutych can represent young people who seek and love the Lord from the heart, even if they have their personal struggles.
The term that is mentioned to talk about their age is "neannias" that would be someone between twelve and fourteen years old. That age is of someone who is in full development and has a limitation to maintain attention and resist so long. On the other hand, the term "sitting in the window", according to the original text, suggests that he did not take that place on a personal whim, but had been sitting there to hear the word, perhaps due to the overcrowding of the place .
This raises the fact that this young man was in a situation of high risk. Where are we placing our youth today? Also keep in mind that the expression "surrender from a deep sleep" or "overcome the dream", as other translations say, suggests that you did not go to the window to sleep.
He went to the window to listen, but began a great struggle to not fall asleep. The word "dream" here is "upne", where the word hypnotism comes from. Have you been through those times? Have you had these difficulties especially when you know your responsibility? Finally, we see that this young man was in the right place when he fell. I was in the house of the Lord. He went to find life and he knew death.
In this there is something that we must attend to urgently when we think of our young people: do not expect them to fall into the task of raising them, let's take care of them now. Why is our youth a great fortune for our church and why should we take care of it?
A fortunate young man is one who meets the saints on the Lord's Day
What a blessing it is to be in the house of the Lord. Among the group that had met that first day of the week (Sunday) was the young Eutychic.
He made the decision to be in the place and on the right day when the people of God met to worship.
Despite his age, he chose to be at the meeting of the saints. He decided to be with all of them to celebrate the death, resurrection and second coming of the Lord when the disciples met "to break the bread."
A fortunate young man is one who strives to hear the Word of God, even if it is a long effort to listen (v. 9).
This verse is very descriptive in this story. There are two different words that show us the effort made by Eutychus to stay awake, but he could not. The first word is "surrender" and the other is "defeated."
These two words in Greek have the same root as the word "katafero", which means, bring something down or put it against something. Both words are used when someone is in a previous fight.
That means that this guy fought, fought, fought to the point of not falling asleep despite Pablo's long dissertation. We live in a time where most young people do not fight, nor do they strive for good things like Eutychus.
They want everything to be easy and that is why today many make bad decisions.
We must remember that the future of a Nation depends on the youth who dedicate effort and time to build ethical and moral values that determine a healthy society.
This sermon was definitely meant for me. 'Cause something one can absolutely do his best, and be in the right at the right time, and still encounter failure. We sometimes experience death while we search for life. However, God is ever faithful to resurrect us through his people, even when we abruptly fall asleep or are in difficult situations. This is an inspirational message. I think I will share it with my pals.
