Introduce Yourself with more info
My name is Petro, I am an emerging artist from Montreal.
Currently studying at Concordia University for my BFA in Painting and Drawing, I hope to become a successful artist and make my living through my work. I am devoted to my practice, and very aware of the hardships that will come from the path I've chosen (mostly from being reminded by others that I'm destined to fail). But none of that, I'm here to test my luck in life, and through hard work I aspire to make my dreams come true.
My work follows topics of displacement, first generation immigration, greek-orthodox iconography/symbolism, as well as cultural collisions. I enjoy referencing my environment, my home, my work place, or any other space that I frequent.
I have already posted a few older works, trying to lead up to the present slowly as a way to track my progression and evaluate my current threshold. I used to produce many more drawings with charcoal and conté rather than oil paint, as I do now. The painting medium is very difficult to use for many reasons, the greatest one being, in my opinion, all the art history associated to the traditional medium. It has weight, in this sense, as a heavier material and a heavy history.
I used to explore traditional subject matter such as still life and portraiture, and I still do, but I've begun looking at subject matter for something more conceptual and contemporary. I hope through the timeline on my blog, this progression will become apparent, and the value and legitimacy of my work will grow.
My studio right now is in my childhood bedroom, in a corner of the room with a window right next to it. It is cozy and I get work done effectively. When I graduate from University and start generating income from my paintings, I hope to be able to move out and rent a bigger studio and start painting full time. I am happy in my situation, I don't feel rushed to grow up faster than I am now, or miss my natural growth in my career. If I ever will become successful, it will be through patience, perseverance and, consistent work ethic.
My materials are mostly Van Gogh oil colours, but I do use Windsor & Newton, Holbein, and Rembrandt.
For paintbrushes, I have a few cheap, a few expensive. The nicest brushes are from a company called Raphael.
I make my own painting medium with liquin and stand oil.
My painting surfaces vary depending on my intention.

You seem very passionate about your work which is admirable. I love how you use mostly Van Gogh oil colours. While I am no artist (or even well-versed in the arts world) I can appreciate good artwork and think its great that there are people like you on steemit!
