To Be a Woman
My monthly visitor showed up yesterday, a good three days early.
I'm supposed to be happy about that, right?
Like, congratulations on no baby!
But geez, it sure does feel more like I'm being punished for having failed to make a baby.
But making a baby is it's own kind of punishment, as well.
Of course, being that it was three days early, I wasn't prepared. So in the interest of getting through this next week as painlessly as possible, I popped a couple of ibuprophen and ordered a "care package" from instacart. I got all the sanitary products I'd need, and also some cookies, ice cream, chips, and salsa. I do not intend to eat it all in one sitting. Haha.
I sat down in bed and gave myself a manicure. I took a really hot shower. I fixed my hair all nice.
And I feel much better. Now I'm just going to spend the rest of today with my snacks and my kindle.
And Wallace and Kiwi.
Maybe some coffee. My periods make me so sleepy.
There is some pretty great news that came along with this period, aside from failing to make a baby.
The symptoms are significantly lighter. Lighter. Get it? Haha okay, tmi, sorry about that.
But seriously, though, all the changes I've made to my diet have made very real improvements to my overall health, including my menses.
Yet another upside to maintaining a gluten-free, (mostly) vegan diet, and practicing the art of listening to the body. By keeping that line of communication open with the body, I can allow the body to point out exactly what I've eaten that was causing distress.
So, like those pancakes I made a few days ago that upset my stomach. Not sure which ingredient messed me up, but I was able to narrow it down to two.
Thanks everyone, for following my story and sharing your perspectives from a fresh angle.
It's in large part because of your suggestions that I'm not completely miserable during my period this week.
Keep 'em coming!

Hope you make Omar a daddy soon haha. Good luck!
Yes, definitely drinking enough water alone and eating clean will help our monthly cycles! I got in the habit of getting Midol, A Coke Classic and a Hershey bar, lol!! However, I have noticed lately when I drink more water and do not get the horrendous sugar products it's better. I'm pretty much gluten free myself too. Good Post!
Did your diet "improved" PMS? Because mine is a bi*ch :)
Yup. My period is lighter, the cramps are far less intense, and my skin is completely clear. No break outs! Before I made the dietary changes, the periods were terrible. I felt like I couldn't move. I've been gluten-free for years now, but I started the vegan diet last month, so this is the first period under the new conditions. A lot of things have improved for me.
I don't mean to suggest that a vegan diet will solve all your problems and take away your PMS, but I'm sure that discovering the types of foods that your body prefers, and sticking to those, could have a significant impact for you.
Thanks for the advice! I try to eat less sugar, and that helped a lot..
I'm not gluten intolerant, but I don't react well to dairy..
So I'm always on a look out for some advice..
